The Business of Development; Creative, Business and Legal Steps needed to take an idea from pre-script to screen
05 Nov 2018 :
Screen Training Ireland will host a special one day course focused on the legal aspects of project development with tutors Gabrielle Kelly, Bill Grantham and Sharon Bowers.

The course takes place in Dublin on Wednesday, November 21st and cost is €100.

Course Profile:

How do you turn an idea, the germ of a story, into a short, feature, game or whatever platform works best for the story? Content is king, but if you fail to take proper steps to protect and secure your IP (Intellectual Property) a potentially  award-winning and successful idea can fail to see the light of day, be released, or generate money for you.

Following the morning session, entertainment lawyer Bill Grantham will cover the specifics of legal documents needed for project development and Sharon Bowyers, literary agent, will cover the process of optioning literary materials and the role of the agent in the development process.*

Topics covered will include:

  • Where to look for good ideas
  • Assessing the value of an idea for the marketplace
  • Registering your own work and optioning other material to develop
  • Creating a sound development timeline
  • Original ideas vs adapted material
  • Stories based on real people
  • Public domain properties and how to utilise them
  • CASE STUDY on project development of short and feature films
  • How to work with literary managers, agents and entertainment lawyers and when to approach them

*Disclaimer – the content of this course is for informational purposes only and in no way should this course be considered as constituting legal advice.
