Undergraduate

BA (Hons) in Film, TV and Screen Media Production – Level 8 (3 years):

Griffith College’s QQI accredited Level 8. The BA (Hons) in Film, TV and Screen Media Production is conducted on a full-time, part-time and blended basis over a three-year period. The aim of the course is to assist enthusiastic students in developing the essential practical skills and knowledge required to work in the dynamic area of film, television and screen production. Students will have access to the campuses dedicated, fully functional TV studio, control panel and editing bays while learning the ropes and creating their own films and documentaries. There is no portfolio requirement for any film courses at Griffith College. Applicants under 23 must apply for this course via the CAO. Mature students can apply directly on our website.

BA in Film, TV and Screen Media Production – Level 7 (3 years):

Griffith’s Bachelor of Arts in Film, TV and Screen Media Production is designed in the specialist area of screen media production. The QQI accredited course is three-years in duration and is delivered full-time. This programme attracts learners because of the programme track-record for providing excellent employment prospects for learners who wish to pursue a career in the screen media industries. Graduates will be able to produce screen media artefacts showcasing technical, creative and logistical skills in film production, post-production, live TV and broadcast, writing and VFX.

Learners are equipped to work in live TV broadcast environments as well as to produce location-based, single or multicamera film, TV and online content. Throughout the programme an industry awareness is developed alongside creativity, concept development, an awareness of history and theory, storytelling, industry-standard software and the ability to work individually and as part of a group. Certificate in Digital Cinematography and Image Grading – Level 8 (Two semesters):

This Level 8 QQI validated certificate equips learners with the knowledge and practical and conceptual skills to work as a camera assistant, camera operator, or self-shooting content producer/director. This programme is for you if you want to gain a qualification recognised in the industry. You will gain a broad and deep education in cinematography and image grading. You will develop vital professional skills in camera operations, lighting, camera movement, working with clients and image finishing. Interpersonal and communication skills are vital in this industry and will also be developed as part of this programme.

In this hands-on programme, delivered by industry professionals, you will learn core practical skills in visual storytelling, camera operation, data management, and equipment handling. As you progress through the programme, you will develop skills: composition, camera programme, you will develop skills in: composition, camera movement, lighting techniques, visual cinematography and planning and realising complex visual sequences. Working across location-based, set-based and studio-based cinematography, this programme will hone your cinematography and visual storytelling abilities in all genres and across all modes of production. Certificate in Live, TV and Studio Broadcast – Level 8 (Two semesters):

The Certificate in Live TV and Studio Broadcast is a one year, QQI validated Level 8 Certificate, aimed at people with no prior experience or portfolio of work. Here at Griffith College, we encourage our students to experiment and explore their creativity, enabling them to advance their knowledge, skills, and competencies using a comprehensive range of industry-standard TV studio technologies, storytelling, presentation and research approaches, and production techniques. The aim of the course is to assist enthusiastic students in developing the essential practical skills and knowledge required to work in the demanding and multi-disciplinary world of modern live studio television production, direction and broadcast. Certificate in Visual Effects for Screen and Virtual Reality – Level 8 (Two semesters):

This programme aims to foster your creative talent and generate industry practitioners emphasising the VFX and VR sectors. Through an integrated learning experience in interactive storytelling, VFX and VR, you will be capable of producing highly specialised assets and publishing them on various platforms. In addition to this, you will be a problem solver who is adaptable to changing environments. This QQI validated level 8 certificate is one year long. When graduated, you'll be equipped with professional and personal skills, from working with others in teams and the ability to effectively communicate through to a wide range of transferable, employable technical and creative skills needed to create a professional portfolio. Work produced on this programme and the skills and knowledge gained, will make you employable in a wide range of disciplines within the film, TV design and screen media sectors. Certificate in TV Production and Design Practice – Level 6 (Two semesters):

Griffith College’s exciting new Level 6 Certificate in TV Production and Design Practices is perfect for those who have an interest in art, design, and film and TV production but have not yet completed a related programme and who do not have a portfolio of work. This certificate gives you the opportunity to explore and experiment across a range of TV production and design disciplines in order to enhance your skills and identify the creative specialism you might wish to pursue as a career or through further study.

This certificate will help you expand on the core knowledge of TV Production as well as various Design practices, giving you the skills and confidence to advance your creative, technical and organisation skills through further education or experience in the field.

Graduates of this programme can progress into either a BA in Film or a BA in a Design programme at Griffith College Dublin. All applicants must apply for this course directly on our website and need to meet minimum entry requirements.

Certificate in Screen Media Production for Small to Medium Enterprises – Level 6 (Two semesters):

Griffith’s Level 6 Certificate in Screen Media Production for SMEs gives you the skills, knowledge, competencies and experience to fulfil the now vital need for in-house video production capabilities in SMEs. This one-year programme is targeted at learners who wish to become in-house video content production specialists within their companies or who wish to provide these services to clients on a freelance basis.

Through the programme's four modules, Writing for Screen, Storytelling for Screen, Presentation and TV Studio Basics and Screen Production, you will learn the principles of storytelling for screen, presenting skills including TV studio basics, followed by the full range of corporate and commercial content production skills. First you’ll learn how to develop your content ideas, then how to prep those ideas through pre-production, and through producing, directing, camera and sound skills how to produce those ideas. Finally you’ll bring your content together through editing and post-production. This is all done through your own learner-generated commercial or corporate video production project.You will learn the principles of storytelling for screen, presenting skills including TV studio basics, followed by the full range of corporate and commercial content production skills of idea development, filming prep and pre-production, production (directing, camera and sound recording) and post-production and editing, through a learner-generated commercial or corporate video production project.

Certificate in Screen Production – Level 6 (12 weeks):

Are you an aspiring filmmaker? Have you always wondered what it would be like to make a short film rather than just watch one? Maybe you’re an amateur filmmaker who’d like to bring some professionalism to your productions? The Certificate in Screen Production gives learners the skills to conceive ideas and develop them into original films and screen media content for multiplatform distribution.

This QQI validated Level 6 programme is taught by filmmakers for people who want to make films. Stemming from the Screen Media Production module of Griffith’s innovative BA in Film, TV & Screen Media Production, this 12-week fully practical course is based on current industry best-practice in short-form screen media content production and emulates real- world film, TV and screen media industry processed to give learners with the fundamental practical skills to produce short-form audio-visual branded or commercial content for multiplatform distribution. Learners are immersed in the practical skills needed in each phase of screen media production – pre-production, production and post-production – so they can make their own informed, logical and creative decisions at every stage. BA in Film and Television Production - Level 7 (3 years) - year three entry only

Griffith’s fully accredited Level 7 programme aims to develop the essential practical skills and knowledge required to work in the dynamic area of film and television production. Students will have access to the campuses dedicated, fully functional TV studio, control panel and editing bays while learning the ropes and creating their own films and documentaries. In final year, students will complete a major project allowing you scope to integrate your skills and personal perspectives to a professional standard. The programme is 3 years long, full-time and run in a partnership with Pulse College. There is no portfolio requirement for this course. Please note, we are only taking applicants for direct entry into year three of this programme. Please view our Level 8 BA (Hons) in Film, TV and Screen Media Production or Level 7 BA in Film, TV and Screen Media Production for entry into year one and year two.

BA in Photographic Media – Level 7 (3 years):

Griffith’s award-winning Level 7 course is conducted on both a full and part-time basis over a three-year period and allows students to develop their own career path with a range of elective modules. This course prepares graduates to work in the fast-paced and innovative industry of commercial photography and related visual fields or go on to further study.

Our aim is to equip our image-makers with the necessary skills and understanding required to compete with the artistic and creative demands of a competitive commercial industry. Creating work and content across different platforms including; photo books, website and video are just some of the beneficial aspects of this programme with an emphasis on business and professional practice in the final year of the degree and the experience of exhibiting their work both on- and off-campus. Learners will finish the course with tangible assets including a professional portfolio, personalised logo, business card, business plan, professional website and self-published book of your work.

Certificate in Photography – Level 6 (1 year):

Our Certificate in Photography offers a broad introduction to photographic practices and studies, including knowledge of basic camera skills and photo techniques, working on location and studio practices, coupled with health and safety and best practice in relation to workflow and post-production. Skills are developed in the areas such as the use of shooting manually, developing industry-standard software, research, learning and presenting skills. The one-year course is available on both a full and part-time basis. On completion, learners have the opportunity to progress into the second year of the BA in Photographic Media course.

Postgraduate Programmes

MA in TV and Radio Journalism

This programme will be of interest to holders of primary degrees who wish have existing learning in media, or wish to embark on a career within the fields of TV and Radio Journalism. There are both full-time and part-time options available and students will have access to the college’s fully functional film and TV studio. It is preferable that applicants hold a minimum Level 8 degree (in any discipline) but relevant previous experiential learning will also be considered. Lecturers in Griffith’s Journalism and Media Faculty come from successful Media companies including RTE, Newstalk, the Irish Examiner as well as a range of experienced Media professionals working as freelance or in the emerging online Media sector.

Griffith Lecturers

 

 

Tanya Doyle

Tanya is a Programme Director of the BA in Film and Television Production within the Journalism & Media Communications faculty at Griffith College. Tanya established herself as an award winning documentary maker in 2004 when she won the Duke of Edinburgh Medal of Excellence for her first film, Moore Street. Tanya's second documentary The House, her directorial debut for television, was nominated for the Best Documentary IFTA 2010, the PRIX EUROPA 2010 and was awarded the prestigious Radharc Award the same year. Her most recent creative documentary Waterlilies, won the Audience Choice Award, Dingle, IFF, 2015. Tanya is the Director of Marmalade Films, an on campus Film Studio run with Daniel Hegarty.


 

Paddy Breathnach

Paddy is the head of the Directing module for the film course, here at Griffith College. He works both as a film producer and director. He directed Man About Dog, Viva and Shrooms. He was also involved in the production of The Mighty Celt and Ape. Breathnach was nominated for an Oscar for his film Viva. He has received awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the Bogotá Film Festival and most recently the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.


 

 

John Wallace

John is a lecturer in Production at Griffith College. In 2007 he established Black Sheep Productions with writer Pierce Ryan, and directors Ronan and Rob Burke. The company produces feature fiction and documentary for international release. Some of the films and documentaries John has worked on are Standby, Apples of the Golan and Dollhouse; which was premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival.



 

 

Sonya Gildea

Is a lecturer in Production & Direction at Griffith College. Sonya has won a number of awards for her short screenplays. These include the Belfast Film Festival (Bua 2007), the Montréal World Film Festival (Bodyblow 2003) and the Moondance International Film Festival (Godless 2004).



 

 

Ciaran Tanham

Cinematography lecturer, Ciaran Tanham has over 25 years’ experience in TV and film. He is currently the president of the Irish Society of Cinematographers (ISC). Ciaran has worked on the sets of Borstal Boy, Raw, Jack Taylor and Love/Hate. He was nominated for an IFTA for Best Cinematography for his work on break through Irish TV drama series "Red Rock”.



 

 

Daniel Hegarty

Daniel is a Producer and Associate lecturer here at Griffith College. He is based on campus in his Marmalade Films Studio. Marmalade Films is an independent production company with an international outlook established in 2008 by Dan and Director Tanya Doyle. Marmalade focuses on creating high quality creative documentaries for Irish and international audiences. Since its inception Marmalade Films has grown to become a Grierson shortlisted, IFTA and Prix Europa nominated and prestigious Radharc Award winning production company. Our documentaries have been broadcast internationally and have screened at major film festivals worldwide.


 

 

Pierce Ryan

Pierce lectures in screen writing at Griffith College. He is a three time IFTA nominated writer (for the short films JellyBaby, An Ranger and Runners), winner in 2010 for Runners. Other awards include Celtic Film and Television Festival, Golden Star Shorts Fest Hollywood, Malibu Film festival and Kerry film Festival. He established Black Sheep Productions in 2007 with producer John Wallace and directors Ronan and Rob Burke. The company produces feature fiction and documentary for international release.
