Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington join Netflix's Belfast-bound The School for Good and Evil

Theron and Washington will join Bridesmaids director Paul Feig to film the Netflix original film, which is due to begin filming at Belfast Harbour Studios later this year.

“I am so thrilled to have Charlize and Kerry in this film,” said Director Paul Feig when discussing the news. “I was honoured to work with Charlize back on Arrested Development and have been dying to work with her again ever since. And I’ve been such a massive fan of Kerry’s forever, and to finally find something for us to do together is just more proof that 2021 is going to be way, way better than 2020.”

The film will follow best friends Sophie and Agatha are about to discover where fairy-tale legacies go to school: The School for Good and Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains.

With her princess ambitions, Sophie knows she'll be picked for the School for Good and join the ranks of past students like Cinderella and Snow White. Meanwhile, Agatha, with her grim aesthetic and wicked cat, seems a natural fit for the villains in the School for Evil. Yet soon the girls find their fortunes reversed: Sophie is dropped into the School for Evil; Agatha into the School for Good. Their friendship is put to the test in this thrilling and comedic story where the only way out of a fairy tale is to live through one.

The School For Good and Evil was Soman Chainani's first novel and an instant New York Times bestseller. The book is the first of six in The School for Good and Evil series. The series has sold over 2.5 million copies, has been translated into 30 languages across six continents, and has amassed a global fan base.  The final book in the series, The School of Good and Evil: One True King was released by HarperCollins on June 2, 2020.

The film is directed by Paul Feig (A Simple FavorGhostbusters, Spy) with Academy Award Winner Charlize Theron (The Old Guard, Bombshell, Atomic Blonde) and Emmy Award Winner Kerry Washington (The Prom, American Son, Little Fires Everywhere) joining the previously announced Sofia Wylie and Sophia Anne Caruso.

David Magee (Life of Pi, Mary Poppins Returns, Finding Neverland) and Laura Solon (Office Christmas Party, Let It Snow) have adapted a screenplay based on the bestselling book by Soman Chainani. Producers include Roth Kirschenbaum’s Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum; Jane Startz, and Feigco’s Paul Feig, and Laura Fischer. Executive Producers are Stephen Jones, Zack Roth, Patricia Riggen, and Soman Chainani.

Netflix will utilise the full 125,000 sq ft of studio, workshop, and office space in Belfast Harbour Studios for what will be its first film where the bulk of the production will be shot in Northern Ireland. The production will adhere to the strictest COVID guidelines and follow the British Film Commission's Safe Working Protocols.
