Thriller Black Medicine begins filming in Northern Ireland

23Ten Productions and Northern Ireland Screen has announced that principal photography has begun in Northern Ireland on Black Medicine, the eleventh film to come through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus scheme.

Jo, a black-market medic carries out illegal operations for the criminal underworld. When she gives refuge to a young girl, Jo must to choose between breaking her medical oath or crossing her ruthless employers.  

Black Medicine stars Antonia Campbell-Hughes (3096 Days, The Other Side of Sleep), Orla Brady (American Horror StoryCollateral, The Foreigner), Amybeth McNulty (Anne with an E, Morgan) and John Connors (Cardboard Gangsters, King of the Travellers).

The screenplay, written and directed by Lisburn native Colum Eastwood, is the eleventh film to come through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus scheme. Financed by Northern Ireland Screen and post-production house Yellowmoon it will film entirely on location in Northern Ireland for three weeks.

Black Medicine is Eastwood’s first feature, a graduate of London Film School his short Here was awarded runner up for Best Student Short at Palm Springs Shortfest in 2014.  His latest short, supernatural horror The Morrigan had an impressive run on the festival circuit having played at Palm Springs, Austin, Galway, Rhode Island and London Short Film Festival.

The fast-paced thriller is the first feature produced by Janine Cobain. With a background in business and finance, she has previously produced shorts funded by Northern Ireland Screen, RTE and BBC.

Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus scheme aims to deliver one debut feature by a Northern Ireland resident creative team (writer, director and producer) each year. Previous films to come through the scheme include Shelly Love’s A Bump Along the Way, Ryan and Andrew Tohill’s The Dig, Chris Baugh and Brendan Mullin’s Bad Day for the Cut, Stephen Fingleton’s The Survivalist and Michael Lennox’s A Patch of Fog.
