14 Mar 2019 : News Desk
Belfast Film Festival
The 2019 Belfast Film Festival will host 90 feature films, 80 short films as well as a wide variety of guests and special events.

The Opening Night Gala features ‘A Bump Along the Way’, a powerful and heartfelt feature following the relationship of a mother and daughter during the daughter’s unplanned pregnancy. The film boasts a host of local talent including debut writer Tess McGowan, director Shelly Love (‘The Forgotten Circus’), producer Louise Gallagher (‘The Dig’) and actors Bronagh Gallagher (‘The Commitments) and Lola Petticrew  (‘Come Home’).

The festival also features a number of special guests including an In Convesation with award winning director, actor and producer Aamir Khan at the Waterfront Hall. Khan’s best known work  , ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Dhobi Ghat’, ‘Dangal’ and ‘Taare Zameen Par’ will screen in the Movie House, Dublin Road during the festival run.

BAFTA winning and Emmy nominated actor Robert Carlyle, star of ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘Trainspotting’ will take part in a Q&A with Brian Henry Martin at the Movie House, Dublin Road, whilst Oscar nominated Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson (‘Room’, ‘What Richard Did’) will be taking part in a Q&A with Hugh Odling Smee in the Queen’s Film Theatre.

‘Beats’ directed by Brian Welsh (ref) will close the festival. The feature film follows the story of two small-town Scottish friends out for one last night together before life takes them in different directions. Going to an illegal rave, they journey into an underworld of anarchy, freedom and collision with the law as they share a night that they will never forget.

The festival’s New Cinema programme includes a range of exciting new films from a vast array of genres. ‘Heavy Trip’ tells the story of a heavy-metal band who have been together for 12 years but haven’t played a single gig. The directors Jukka and Juuso Laatio will be in attendance after the screening to take part in a Q&A.

Other New Cinema screenings include ‘The Angel’, a stylish portrayal of a shallow serial killer in 1970’s Argentina, ‘Women at War’, a funny and warm-hearted musical tale of a woman on a personal environmental crusade and Bo Burnham’s ‘Eighth Grade’, a keenly observed and achingly funny portrait of a thirteen-year-old girl.

Special events throughout the festival include a screening of ‘Strictly Ballroom’ in the Titanic Hotel Ballroom complete with dance demonstrations, ‘Bruce Springsteen on Screen’, a night celebrating all things Bruce Springsteen and a screening of ‘The Matrix’ in the Sonic Arts Research Lab. Festival regulars such as the BFF Quiz, Film Devour and Cinema Sports as well as the Short Film Competition and selection of NI Independents have also been scheduled in the programme.
