Cinema Epoch Acquires U.S. Rights to Tom Collins' 'Penance'

Tom Collins' bilingual feature film ‘Penance’ has been acquired by L.A. based indie distributor Cinema Epoch.

The deal was made by Starline Entertainment who is handling worldwide sales of the film, which was produced by Collins' Derry-based production company De Facto Films and Edwina Forkin's Zanzibar Films.

Speaking about the deal with Cinema Epoch, Director Tom Collins said:

“We have to thank Julie Delaney and all at Starline Entertainment. The Film was very difficult to make, it seems trying to say something about the state of the place we live in and also to make a film outside of Dublin has become very difficult in this country. So it was great to shoot in Donegal. That's Penance and Star Wars, right?  I'm delighted the film is getting out to the states and Europe. Especially in these Pro Brexit times, conservative times. I hope we said something that goes beyond the rhetoric and opposes the implementation of borders. That can be a tough sell at the moment. “

Cinema Epoch President, Gregory Hatanaka added:

“We’re immensely excited about giving viewers here in the U.S. the chance to experience this powerful movie by multi-award-winning Irish director Tom Collins and hope that today’s generation will learn from the tragic historical events depicted in the film.”

Centred around the events of the 1916 Easter Rising & the beginning of ‘The Troubles’ in 1960s Derry City, ‘Penance’ follows the story of Catholic priest (‘Peter Coonan) as he is forced to confront his past as a firebrand preacher promoting violence against British rule in Ireland when a former protégé who fell under his influence reappears 50 years later as a hardened IRA gunman.

The film, which stars Peter Coonan (‘The Drummer and the Keeper’), Barry Barnes (‘71’), Gerard McSorley (‘Omagh’), and Emma Eliza Regan (‘Death of a Superhero’), was written by Tom Collins & Greg O’Braonain, and shot by DoP, Ciaran Tanham.

Other prominent credits on the film include: Dermot Diskin; Editor, Maeve Paterson; Costume Design, Sound; Nikki Moss, and Pol Brennan; Score.

Penance’ was produced by Tom Collins Derry-based production company De Facto Films & Edwina Forkins’ Zanzibar Films. The film was also supported by Irish language broadcaster TG4, The Irish Film Board, Northern Ireland Screen, and the Irish Language Broadcast Fund.
