Universal Announce ROI/UK Release Date for Oscar Nominated 'Lady Bird'
12 Feb 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Universal Pictures Ireland has announced the highly anticipated release of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’.

The film, which stars Saoirse Ronan, is set for release in cinemas across Ireland and the UK – Friday, February 23rd.

The A24 production has enjoyed major international success since it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival back in September 2017.  The film which had an estimated budget of $10 million dollars has picked up over $44 million in the US alone, as well as being chosen in the top 10 films of 2017 by the American Film Institute, National Board of Review and Time Magazine.

With regards to awards, ‘Lady Bird’s leading actor and Irish star Saoirse Ronan has enjoyed some breakthrough moments, picking up her first Golden Globe for ‘Best Female Actor in a Leading Role’, her third Oscar nomination, and her fourth BAFTA nomination.

The film received five Academy Award nominations in total with writer / director Greta Gerwig picking up her first pair of Oscar nominations for ‘Best Achievement in Directing’ and ‘Best Original Screenplay’.  It has also been nominated for ‘Best Motion Picture of the Year’, and ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role’ for Laurie Metcalf’s portrayal of Lady Bird’s mother ‘Marion’.

Ronan’s success has taken Ireland by storm and is sure to have a knock-on effect with big numbers anticipated for the films general release on Friday, February 23rd.
