Ruth Treacy of Tailored Film selected as Ireland's representative for EFP Producers On The Move

Irish producer Ruth Treacy has been selected by Screen Ireland as Ireland’s representative for the latest instalment of the long-standing programme that promotes promising producers and foster international co-productions.

Similar to last year, this year’s programme will be held online again from 17 - 21 May.

“I'm so thrilled to have been chosen as the Irish rep for Producer on the Move this year,” Treacy told IFTN. “It's a scheme I've always looked at with great respect, and have wanted to be a part of, so it is a real honour that I was chosen by Screen Ireland as the delegate this year.”

20 selected European producers, including those producing this year’s Silver Bear and Oscar-winning films Natural Light and Another Round, will be presenting their current projects in speed meetings and during roundtable sessions.

I'm very excited to participate in the events later this month,” Treacy continued. “It's a shame it's all virtual again this year, but I've no doubt that all the participants will make the most of the time we have to network and hopefully build strong connections for future projects together.”

Treacy will be joined by fellow producers: Annabella Nezri (Belgium), Nikolay Mutafchiev (Bulgaria), Bojan Kanjera (Croatia), Marek Novák (Czech Republic), Kasper Dissing (Denmark), Jean-Christophe Reymond (France), Maite Woköck (Germany), Sára László (Hungary), Marica Stocchi (Italy), Iris Otten (The Netherlands), Gary Cranner (Norway), Beata Rzezniczek (Poland),Tathiani Sacilotto (Portugal), Bianca Oana (Romania), Katarína Tomková (Slovak Republic), Andraž Jerič (Slovenia), Clara Nieto (Spain), Nima Yousefi (Sweden), and Sarah Born (Switzerland).

EFP Managing Director, Sonja Heinen explained the decision to remain online stating that it “was important for us to give the participants a clear sense of planning that wouldn’t be dependent on how the pandemic situation develops”.

“Of course, digital will never replace the personal exchange of ideas and experiences or networking in a festival setting,” Sonja explained. “But we have learned a lot over the last year and promise that we are doing our very best to connect these creative producers and make their work visible for the international industry. And, who knows, if all goes well and many of the Producers on the Move are able to make the journey, we might even have a chance of meeting in person at the festival in Cannes in July."

However, one positive aspect to this year’s programme is that more than half of the 20 producers from 20 different countries for this year’s programme are women.

“The initiative has been very well regarded internationally for decades now and to be able to add my name to the list of amazing Irish and European producers who have participated on it in the years before me, is just  fantastic,” Treacy added.

The selected participants have already been behind a number of award-winning films: Kasper Dissing produced Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round whose tally of prizes includes five Robert Awards, four European Film Award and, most recently, the International Feature Film Oscar, or Sára Laszlo’s production of Natural Light, which won the Silver Bear at this year’s Berlinale.

Some producers have tended to concentrate on the production of animated films such as Maite Woköck with her Berlin-based company Telescope Animation (The Last Whale Singer), while others focus on debut films such as Andraž Jerič, who is developing first features by Ester Ivakič (Neither Voice), Gregor Andolšek (This Is A Robbery!) and Tosja Flaker Berce (One Minute To Recess), Annabella Nezri, who produced the Berlinale entry of 2020 and first feature film Jumbo by Zoé Wittockand Sarah Born has Pascal Reinmann’s debut Carnivalesque in development

While Treacy will be donning both the producer and director’s hats for her upcoming project Louise Lives Large, which she will be developing and showcasing during the programme.

Louise Lives Large is a quirky 10-part comedy drama TV series for 8-12 year olds, which follows thirteen year old cancer survivor Louise who creates a  'live large' bucket list of rebellious milestones she wants to experience, to make up for all the time she missed out on while sick. The series was created by Carol Walsh and is written by Walsh, Richie Conroy, and Sian Ni Mhuiri.

“We would like to position the show tonally as a 'Booksmart' for much younger audiences, as it will deal with pre-teen issues and burgeoning sexuality in a very real and honest way,” Treacy told IFTN.

“As I have directed 7 drama series for young people's programming in RTÉ, I am taking on the role of director for a number of episodes on the series, but we will also be working with another director on the project,” Treacy explained.

Having been supported in development by RTÉ and Screen Ireland, Treacy is aiming to bookmark a filming slot during Summer 2022 for the series.

“I will also work as a producer on the series, but as it gets closer to filming, this role will be overseen more by my producing colleagues Eithne Fitzsimons and Julianne Forde. This is how we have approached many of our children's TV projects in the past and it has worked very well for us,” Treacy continued.

“However, on our feature films, I am usually always in only a producer role. We have some exciting feature projects that we also hope to shoot in late 2021/early 2022, including our co-production 'Bring Them Down' with Wild Swim Films

EFP Producers On The Move is supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the European Union and Eurimages and in cooperation with Festival Scope. Screen Ireland is among the national film promotion institutes for this year’s edition.
