WestEnd Films secures territory sales for KATIE in Australia and Asia

WestEnd Films has secured a number of sales deals for Ross Whitaker’s Award winning Katie Taylor documentary.

The London-based company has secured distribution for the film in Asia and Australasia, with three deals encompassing China, South Asia, and Australia/New Zealand. WestEnd has sold rights to Heritage films for distribution in Australia and New Zealand. Fox Asia has acquired the film for screening across its pay television channels across South Asia. Major distributor Huanxi Media Group has taken the film for release in China.

This is in addition to a UK and Ireland Netflix deal secured by Wildcard Distribution, which saw KATIE reach the top ten documentaries on the streamer.

Speaking about the deal, director Ross Whitaker told IFTN:

"It's always great news to hear of sales abroad as ultimately it's brilliant to have work seen by as many people as possible. Katie Taylor's story is one of a young woman overcoming the odds in a male-dominated arena and I think that's something that's both timely and inspiring. As she continues to break down barriers, I'm delighted that this film can give people around the world further insight into her back story and the amazing leader and competitor that she is."

A co-production between True Films and Venom Films, KATIE made its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2018 where it won Best Irish Documentary and was subsequently distributed to UK and Irish Cinemas by Wildcard Distribution.

The film charts London 2012 Olympic Champion Katie Taylor’s ascent to the top of professional boxing after a devastating end to her amateur career at the Rio 2016 Olympics, which were overshadowed by personal problems. Taylor has gone on to become a two-weight World Champion in the professional ranks and is ranked as the number one female boxer on the planet.

KATIE was recently awarded the Global Vision Documentary Award at the Boston Irish Film Festival 2020, which will take place in November this year after a Covid-19 postponement.

The feature documentary was produced by True Films and Venom Films in association with Screen Ireland, RTE, and with the support of the BAI Sound & Vision and Irish Government Film Incentives. It was directed by Ross Whitaker and produced by Aideen O’Sullivan for True Films, and executive produced by Andrew Freedman for Venom Films. Editing was by Andrew Hearne and post-production took place at Outer Limits.
