Jurassic World Short Filmed in Ireland Releases Online
17 Sep 2019 : News Desk
Battle at Big Rock
The eight-minute short titled ‘Battle at Big Rock’ was shot in secret last winter, filmed on location in Wicklow.

Battle at Big Rock aired on September 15th, on FX in the US and was immediately posted online afterwards. Production on the eight-minute short was completed in five days with a small crew near the Powerscourt Estate, Co. Wicklow.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World), who co-writes alongside Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising), the short takes place one year after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in Big Rock National Park, where dinosaurs are now living in our world. The story follows a family of five whose encounter with these wild animals becomes a terrifying fight for survival.

Starring André Holland (Moonlight) and Natalie Martinez (End of Watch), Battle at Big Rock also boasts a strong Irish contingent behind the scenes, including production designer Tom Conroy (Legend), costume designer Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh (Love & Friendship), and Fastnet Films executive Macdara Kelleher (Black ‘47) as co-producer.

In an interview with Collider, Trevorrow discussed locating the short in Ireland:

"We shot it in Ireland last winter. They have a grove of redwood trees outside Dublin that look exactly like the national parks in Northern California. I honestly never thought we'd make it this far without getting found out. The Irish can keep a secret."

"No one’s ever shot a Jurassic movie in Ireland, the crew was fired up. The cast was fully committed to making 8 minutes that could stand alongside the movies. We were a family and we believed in what we were doing. It felt like an indie film, but with a massive animatronic."

Battle at Big Rock will presumably pre-empt events of Jurassic World 3, which is set to release on June 11, 2021.
