Irish Indie Horror 'The Perished' to World Premiere at FrightFest in London
08 Jul 2019 : Nathan Griffin
The Perished
Celtic Badger Media, an Irish production company based between Limerick, Clare and Galway, has confirmed that their second feature film, The Perished will world premiere at FrightFest in London on Monday August 26th.

Written & Directed by Paddy Murphy and produced by Barry Fahy & Vachn Gill, The Perished is a dark social horror dealing with the reality of Irish women who have had to travel to the UK for abortions for generations and come home to face shame and stigma. It combines that with an equally traumatic story of a mass baby grave below a parochial house; the spirits within seeking a mother.

Speaking about the selection, writer/director Paddy Murphy told IFTN:

“I've been attending FrightFest every year since 2016 and always dreamed of having even a short film appear there. In 2017 at the event, Joe Lynch director of Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem & Netflix's upcoming Point Blank gave me the push to start writing another feature film - as such The Perished is a film borne out of FrightFest, so it feel's fateful to be world premiering it there.

“It's so important for me that this incredible emerging cast & crew get to experience having our film screened at one of the world’s largest genre festivals and the pride I feel for each and every one of them is immeasurable. I feel equally proud of the film and what it has to say about Ireland's past, present and future. It's a film dedicated to the women of Ireland and the struggles they have faced and continue to face as we move forward as a more progressive country on the world stage. My deepest thanks go to Barry Fahy and Vachn Gill, without whom the film wouldn't exist. This is what Indie film is capable of. Imagine what we could do with funding & support.”

The film stars Limerick’s Courtney McKeon (The Three Don’ts) in the lead role of Sarah Dekker, with Live 95fm’s Paul Fitzgerald (Killinaskully) acting alongside her as her best friend, Davet Lynch. The film features Stephen Tubridy (Illusions of the Mind, The Three Don’ts) as the supernatural entity known as Kilin. Fiach Kunz (Black 47, Game of Thrones, Blue Dawn) co-stars as Sarah’s boyfriend Shane Daly. His sister, Rebecca, is played by veteran stage actress Lisa Tyrrell (Extremities).

Conor Lambert (Intermission, Love & Friendship) and Noelle Clarke (Christmas at Draculas) feature as Sarah’s parents, Richard and Elaine Dekker, with emerging Galway talent Oisin Robbins supporting as Rebecca’s boyfriend, Nigel Kiely. Limerick actors Tim Hourigan & Brian O’ Regan also feature in the film.

FrightFest began in 2000 and has hosted premieres for films by Guillermo Del Toro, Neil Marshall, Jen & Sylvia Soska, and Adam Green & Joe Lynch. This year’s selection includes Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, written & produced by Guillermo Del Toro and directed by Andre Ovredal (The Troll Hunter), as well as Crawl from Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension, Piranha 3d) and Rabid, a remake of the David Cronenberg 1977 classic of the same name, directed by the Soska Sisters. The festival is run by Paul McEvoy, Alan Jones, Ian Rattray and is considered the largest genre festival in the UK.

The film's poster was created by Christopher Shy, a US based artist who has worked on posters for Godzilla King of The Monsters & Pet Semetary as well as graphic novels for the video game series Dead Space. The sound mix and design was handled by Italy based Massimiliano Borghesi, who did sound for last year’s Frightfest success, Book of Monsters.

Shannon’s Weird Cylinder Studios, run by musician Evan Murphy composed the music for the film while emerging artist, Aoife Meade wrote & performed the film’s theme, The Good Book, which can be heard in the trailer.

The Perished, which received no external funding from local or governmental bodies, was entirely funded by the three producers & three associate producers, all of whom were involved in several roles of developing the film. The selection is a great achievement for local film production.

Plans for an Irish Premiere for the film will be released over the coming weeks.
