'Brendan Grace – Funny Man' Debuts on RTE One – Monday, October 8th
08 Oct 2018 : Nathan Griffin
As Brendan Grace celebrates 50 years in the entertainment business, Brian Reddin’s new documentary ‘Brendan Grace – Funny Man’ looks back over the brilliant career of Ireland’s favourite funny man.

The documentary airs on RTE One at 9:35pm.

Shot on location throughout Ireland the UK and Boston and featuring interviews with a who’s who of the Irish entertainment business, this documentary is a revealing and often hilarious portrait of a performer beloved by everybody.

Speaking about the making of the documentary, Director Brian Reddin told IFTN:

"It’s been a real joy making this documentary on Brendan. He gave us total access to his life and didn’t hold anything back. Nothing was off limits. He allowed us film whatever we liked and he still hasn’t watched it. He’ll be seeing the documentary tonight for the first time just like everyone else. So, if he doesn’t like it, it may be my last!

“In a first for me as a documentary maker, everyone we asked to be in it agreed immediately, so we have a stellar line up of interviewees and it was great to work with them all. Meeting Hutch (David Soul) was a particular joy. The crew had to make me promise not to ask him to sign his action figure. We’ve been making this for the last few months and I’m really excited to see the reaction to it"

Born into poverty in the Liberties, Grace began his career as a ballad singer with The Gingermen but quickly gravitated towards comedy and built an act that saw him headline throughout the world. With his beloved character Bottler and his celebrated routines which include Father of the Bride, Brendan has performed for royalty, celebrities – famously wowing Frank Sinatra – and countless fans throughout his 50 years on the road.

Speaking about the documentary, Comedian Brendan Grace added:

"I’m thrilled about this documentary and looking forward to watching it. I’m glad they’ve decided to do it while I’m still standing. They normally do these things posthumously which makes it a lot harder for me to see it!”

This documentary follows Brendan on the road throughout Ireland, spends time with him at home and travels with him to America as he visits family and friends. With exclusive access to the Grace family and Brendan’s rich archive, this is a complete and intimate portrait of a comedy legend.

The profile features interviews with Brendan O’Carroll (who began his career with Brendan), Jason Byrne (who worked as a lounge boy during Brendan’s act), friends and fans Pat Shortt, Paul McGrath, Michael Flatley, David Soul, Shay Healy, Sil Fox, Adèle King (Twink), Finbar Furey and Arthur Matthews (co-writer Fr. Ted) – also featured are Brendan’s wife Eileen, his sister Maria and his kids Melanie, Amanda, Bradley and Brendan.

The documentary was shot by Gerry MacArthur and edited in Windmill Lane by Ultan Murphy. It was produced and directed by IFTA winning producer Brian Reddin. A Dearg Films production for RTE - executive producer for RTE is Grainne McAleer.

‘Brendan Grace – Funny Man’ airs on RTE One – Monday, October 8th at 9:35pm.
