CAO: Eye on IADT
27 Jan 2016 : Seán Brosnan
With the CAO deadline looming (February 1st), IFTN has scoured some of the film and television courses Ireland has to offer for prospective students.

Here, we talk to Donald Taylor Black, Head Of Department Film and Media at IADT, about what his college has to offer.

What film and television courses do IADT have in the CAO?

BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production.

BA (Hons) in Animation.

BA (Hons) in Design for Stage & Screen (Production Design/Costume Design/Make-up Design)

BA (Hons) in 3D Design, Modelmaking & Digital Art.

What do you think makes IADT unique for prospective students?

Our national reputation is based on the consistently high achievements of our student productions in both professional competitions and festivals, at home and abroad; the careers of our graduates in the entertainment and media industries; and the very high standard of applied film education that has always been provided by us in Dún Laoghaire.

We have a highly successful record of teaching film making for over 30 years and, in particular, our national and international reputation as The National Film School since 2003.

We have the broadest suite of inter-related practical courses in the area of film, television and animation in Ireland, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

We are proud of our excellent equipment and facilities, including Alexa cameras, and our state-of -the-art HD Television studios in our new NFS Building, which was opened by President Michael D. Higgins in November 2013.

We have highly developed connections with major film schools throughout the world and were the first Irish full member of CILECT, the International Association of Film and Television Schools. There are opportunities for exchanges between us and them for both students and staff.

How do you prepare students for working in the industry?

Each course teaches professional practice and has an industry related module. All of our staff, whether full-time, part-time or visiting lecturers, have considerable industry experience and excellent contacts. We facilitate internships and work experience for students and recent graduates, although every programme has its own strategy, including industry-related projects; Animation, for instance, arranges that every Irish studio or production company comes in to meet the 4th Year students before they graduate.

Since 2004, we have been running our highly successful NFS Lecture series, which has brought 70 top industry professionals into IADT, to talk about how they began in the industry and their careers to date. We're hoping to reach a total of 75 NFS Lectures by Easter or the end of the academic year. So far in 2015/16, we've had Nelson Lowry (animation designer), Lisa Albert (writer/producer MAD MEN), Consolata Boyle (costume designer) and Brendan Gleeson (actor). In the coming weeks we have Ed Guiney (producer) and John Paul Kelly (production designer). As it happens all of this group have either won Emmy’s and/or received Oscar nominations.

Walsh (director), Gary Shore (director), Ciaran Donnelly (director), Paul Duane (writer/director), Declan Recks (director), Brendan Muldowney (writer/director), Ciaran Foy (writer/director), Ken Wardrop (documentary maker), Liam McGrath (documentary maker), Maurice Sweeney (documentary maker), Conor Barry (producer), Rob Walpole (producer), Brendan McCarthy (writer/producer), Suzanne McAuley (producer), Robbie Ryan BSC (cinematographer), Kate McCullough (cinematographer), James Mather (cinematographer), Ruairi O'Brien (cinematographer), Brien Vahey (production designer), Ray Ball (production designer), Anna Rackard (production designer), Susie Cullen (production designer), Stephen Daly (production designer), Ben Yea?tes (editor), Mick Mahon (editor), Sharon Doyle (make up designer), Tom McInerney (make up designer), Jason Butler (animator), Cat Little (animator), Teemu Auersalo (animator), Jack O'Shea (animator) and Eamonn Butler (animator).
