Dingle International Film Festival Closes Its Doors
13 Jun 2019 : Nathan Griffin
Dingle International Film Festival
After 13 years, the Dingle International Film Festival has announced that it will close its doors.

The Festival has decided to close its doors due to lack of adequate funding to keep the festival going despite having delivered 13 years in Dingle town in Co. Kerry. In the wake of the announcement, the Board of the festival have stated:

“Dingle IFF first and foremost, would like to say a huge thank you to all their diehard independent sponsors and friends, to all their funders and supporters, to all those industry experts both home and abroad, and to all of their audiences who have sat and watched and learned and shared with them over the years. Dingle IFF thanks everyone for the last 13 years and wish Maurice, all their industry friends and their audiences over the years all the very best in the future.”

Maurice Galway, founder and Artistic Director has given over a huge part of his life to growing and developing the Festival, but sadly, it has become apparent that after 13 years, funding is still a very significant issue.  A combination of the Festival becoming too big and the funding becoming too low, has resulted in a stalemate wherein the Festival cannot employ the staff it needs in order to continue with the integrity and attention to detail it has come to deliver.  The Festival will not compromise on its content and so have made the very difficult decision to close its doors and cease business. Therefore, the Board of the Dingle IFF, together with the Artistic Director, have agreed to wind down the company and close its doors.

The Board announced that they “would like to thank Maurice Galway for his unwavering devotion and dedication to the Festival.  Without his integrity and tenacity the Festival would not be what it is today. Dingle IFF is a very significant player on the Festival circuit and is held in high esteem both in Ireland and worldwide.  Each year guests and films come in from home and abroad and this is in no small way, down to the hard work of Maurice Galway.”

Maurice Galway will also be presented the Gregory Peck Award: For Excellence in the Art of Film, which is given as part of the Dingle International Film Festival. Gregory Peck’s family in LA fully support the award and regularly make journeys to Dingle when it is being presented. Gregory Peck’s father spent his childhood years in Minard, Dingle, and when Gregory came to Dingle it was with a sense of coming home; his family share in that love for Dingle.

The Award is based on the Aglish Pillar from Minard and is crafted by local jeweller Brian de Staic. The Festival are extremely thankful to Brian de Staic for his continued support to the Festival and for his designing of the Award.

In June of this year, Gregory Peck’s son, Anthony Peck and his family, will travel to Dingle and make the presentation of this Award to Festival Director, Maurice Galway in their fathers’ name as a mark of gratitude and respect for all the work he has put in to the Festival and to making this Award such a significant one.

Speaking about the decision to award Maurice, Anthony Peck said:

‘It's always a coming home when we return to Dingle and, on this occasion, it is with special purpose and pleasure to be joining you for the purpose of honouring Maurice Galway for his determination and artistic integrity as Founder and Director of the Dingle International Film Festival’

The Peck Family visit this time will include 3 generations of Pecks: Anthony Peck, his son Zachary Peck and Zachary’s son, Atticus Anthony Peck - whose name gives a respectful nod to Gregory’s role as Atticus Finch in the 1962 ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ directed by Robert Mulligan and based on the 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

Maurice founded Dingle International Film Festival in 2007 and came to Dingle seasoned in the Festival circuit, having led Samhlaíocht Arts Festival and having set up the Kerry Film Festival.  He brought with him experience and expertise which he has employed in Dingle. Maurice is fundamental to the Festival and is at its very heart. Every guest and volunteer knows Maurice and he makes it his job to take time with everyone. This in turn is the spirit that is nurtured within the Festival itself so that every filmmaker and industry expert is made to feel included and welcome.

Dingle IFF has become the Festival of choice for filmmakers and those working in the industry. The 2019 Festival was the biggest in its history and the most successful, with attendees looking forward to 2020 already. With its rigorous and discerning programme curation, its attention to detail, its warmth, hospitality and respect for work submitted and attendees/guests, it is no surprise.  For some guests they make the pilgrimage year after year.

The presentation of the award will take place in The Phoenix Cinema on Saturday June 29th along with a special screening of the feature film ‘The Bravados’ starring Gregory Peck and Joan Collins. This is a unique opportunity to experience this classic film on the big screen which will be introduced by Anthony Peck. Tickets are available to attend this event on Eventbrite
