05 Jan 2023 : Nathan Griffin
Flora and Son selected for Sundance.
Once and Sing Street director John Carney’s latest film Flora and Son is one of five new world premieres announced for the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, which takes place in Utah at the end of this month.

Screening in the Premieres section, Flora and Son will join a line-up of 110 feature-length films, representing 28 countries at the acclaimed film festival.

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker John Carney (Sing StreetOnce), the film stars Eve Hewson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Orén Kinlan and Jack Reynor.

The film follows single mom Flora, who is at war with her teenage son and petty thief Max. Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, she rescues a beat-up guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person’s trash can be a family’s salvation.

Shot on location in Dublin last summer, Flora and Son is produced by Rebecca O’Flanagan and Robert Walpole for Irish production company Treasure Entertainment (Handsome Devil, Smother) and Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story and Distressed Films.

The film is supported by Screen Ireland in association with FilmNation, Fifth Season, Likely Stor and Distressed Films. Sales are handled by FilmNation.

Flora and Son will join Laura McGann’s Irish feature documentary The Deepest Breath, which has been selected to also make its world premiere at the Utah-based festival. Read more about Netflix’s acquisition of the exciting documentary, which is backed by A24, Motive Films, Ventureland, and RAW.

Sundance has a strong history as a powerful platform for Irish film in previous years, including recent Sinead O’Connor documentary Nothing Compares (2022), Element Pictures and Clare Dunne’s Herself (2020), and John Carney’s debut feature, Once (2007).

The Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 19th – 29th, 2023 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Utah.
