Planning Permission granted for "State of the art" Greystones Film Studio and Media Campus
06 Jan 2021 : News Desk
Greystones Harbour
Wicklow County Council has granted a 10-year planning permission to Greystones Media Campus (GMC) Ltd for a multi-studio film and media campus in Greystones.

The €150m development  will  see an expected  73,511 square metres of studio space, alongside offices, and ancillary production buildings built on the 50-acre site at the IDA Business and Technology Park at Greystones. When complete, the project will more than double the stage capacity in Ireland.  The project is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs with anticipated direct, indirect, and induced economic impact valued at €1.54bn gross, representing a major boon to Greystones and the surrounding areas.

Greystones Media Campus (GMC) Ltd is a 50/50 joint venture between builders John Sisk & Son Ltd and the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF), which is managed and controlled by State-owned debt agency, the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA).

The campus will be third major studio in Wicklow, joining Ardmore Studios, which has hosted major productions such as Braveheart, The Field, Into the Badlands, Little Women (BBC), The Man who Invented Christmas, The Tudors, and more. While neighbour Ashford Studios has been home to the hit TV Show Vikings and Netflix’s upcoming spin-off Vikings: Valhalla.

The venture will aim to capitalise on the growing demand for content by major streamers such as Amazon, Netflix, Disney, and Apple who are currently engaged in a major race for studio space to keep pace with the global demand for new content. There is a well-documented global shortage of studio space and, alongside Ireland’s attractive Section 481 tax incentive, increased studio availability and capacity could put Ireland on a sound footing to be a major site of global film & television production.

Planning Documents state that a central motivation for ISIF's involvement "is that the development of this studio will support the broader film and TV industry and in particular the existing Irish studio infrastructure across Ireland but specifically in County Wicklow where a globally recognised cluster will be created".

It adds that the ISIF has identified the Greystones project "as strategically important to address the shortage of capacity and promote Ireland as a location for foreign and domestic producers".
