Silk Road International Film Festival Select 'Michael Inside' for the Shanghai International Film Festival's Belt & Road Film Programme
15 Jun 2018 : Nathan Griffin
‘Michael Inside’ has been selected to screen at the 21st Shanghai International Film Festival, which runs from June 16th-25th in Shanghai, China.

Directed by Frank Berry, the film was selected by the Silk Road International Film Festival to screen in the Belt & Road Film Week of the Shanghai International Film Festival programme.

Silk Road International Film Festival Director, Carla Mooney, will also be in Shanghai for the official signing of the updated Memorandum of Understanding ceremony and to promote the cinema of Ireland.

The ‘Belt & Road Film Week’, is an initiative set up to further developing the cultural exchange of film between different countries and regions. The film week aims to attract filmmakers from all over the world and to build an open platform for international communication of film culture and industry.

The ‘Belt and Road Film Week’ programme will include the following events: The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance Signing Ceremony; to which Silk Road International Film Festival is a signatory, Film Screenings and Post-Screening Talks, Film Market Co-Production Showcase, Film Culture Roundtable Talk, and The Belt and Road Film Night.

The Film Week will show 26 films from 26 different countries. From these films, the program will launch and nominated films based on the opinions of professional film selectors. The three awards, including the Audience Choice Award, the Media Choice Award for film, and the Media Choice Award for filmmaker, will be launched depending on the votes from the audience and media juries, in order to motivate their participation.

Speaking about the announcement, Director Frank Berry said:

“We’re delighted with the news that MICHAEL INSIDE has been selected for the ‘Belt and Road Film Week’ section of the Shanghai International Film Festival. This is a great opportunity for our film, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how the story resonates with audiences in this part of the world.”

Written and directed by Frank Berry, ‘Michael Inside’ stars Dafhyd Flynn, Moe Dunford and Lalor Roddy and tells the story of Michael McCrea, an impressionable 18-year-old living with his grandfather Francis in a Dublin housing estate, who gets caught holding a bag of drugs for his friend's older brother and is sentenced to three months in prison.

The film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last summer where it won Best Irish Film and Dafhyd picked up the Bingham Ray New Talent Award.  Since then it's been wowing audiences and critics alike.  It picked up the IFTA for ‘Best Film’ in February, and has garnered numerous five-star reviews.  The film had its UK premiere at the highly regarded Glasgow Film Festival last month where it received fantastic reactions from the festival audience.

Produced by Donna Eperon, Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O'Sullivan for Subotica and Write Direction Films, the film was made with funding from the Irish Film Board.

‘Michael Inside’ will screen in Shanghai on the following dates:

Saturday, June 16th – SFC Cinema World – 13:30pm

Sunday, June 17th – Joy House – 18:30pm

Monday, June 18th – The Grand Theatre – 18:30pm
