Line-up for 8th Silk Road International Film Festival announced

The Silk Road International Film Festival (SRIFF) is held annually in Dublin, Ireland. This year it will take place around the Chinese Lunar New Year, from 21st-25th January, 2020.

Founded in 2012, the SRIFF is fast becoming an international acclaimed film festival. Past guests have included world renowned filmmakers such as Director Béla Tarr (The Turin HorseSatantango), Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (RedsThe Last EmperorApocalypse Now) and Cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari (A Separation).

This year’s Honorary guest Director Abel Ferrara (King of New YorkBad LieutenantPasoliniWelcome to New YorkTommaso) will attend the 8th edition to receive the Silk Road International Film Festival Honorary Award at the Lord Mayor of Dublin’s Mansion House during the official opening ceremony. Abel Ferrara’s film Tommaso starring Willem Dafoe, which screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2019, will screen at the Irish Film Institute followed by a Q&A with Chris O’Neill on Tuesday 22nd January.  SRIFF will hold a masterclass with Abel Ferrara in Trinity College Dublin on Thursday 23rd January introduced by Michael Lee of Film Ireland, supported by Screen Skills Ireland.

The festival will screen an exclusive array of world cinema showcasing a rich diversity of over 90 films from 40 international countries, including documentaries, shorts, student films & a newly introduced category of music videos this year. As well as screening international films there is a special selection of films from the “Silk Road”, countries part of the historical network of the Silk Road ancient trade routes. The selection called “Belt & Road” includes Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean and European cinema.

Screening highlights include The Tiger Who Came For Tea (UK), Tomasso;(Italy), Beijing into Songs (Brazil/China), The Swing Maker (China). A number of chinese filmswill also screen as part of a collaboration with the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.

SRIFF also aims to give student filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work internationally through the student filmmaking competition “Film Festivals Cinergy”, a union of film festivals around the world, aiming to promote talents in filmmaking & to foster cross-cultural collaboration. Student filmmakers have an opportunity to win a trip to Notre Dame University International Film Festival, Lebanon to screen their film in competition where flights & accommodation are part of the winning prize. 

SRIFF is supported by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China & Shanghai International Film Festival under the Belt & Road Film Festival Alliance. Main sponsors of SRIFF include Dublin City Council, Trinity College Dublin, ODEON cinema, DubHub, NolaClan, O’Hara’s Irish Craft Beer, the Silk Road Cafe and The Merrion as the official hotel partner. SRIFF is supported by RTÉ Supporting the Arts.
