'Paramedics' Producer Rob King Takes on New 8-Part Discovery/UKTV Series
16 Nov 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Dublin born Series Producer / Director Rob King has been announced for a new air cargo documentary series due for release on Discovery.

King is no stranger to difficult and daunting access observational documentaries, having previously produced TV3’s critically acclaimed ‘Paramedics’ series. Spanning three seasons, ‘Paramedics’ gave an insightful and honest first person view inside the world of Ireland’s frontline emergency lifesavers - the National Ambulance Service (NAS), from car crashes to cardiac arrests and everything in between.

‘Paramedics’ aired its third and final series on Virgin Media Television (then TV3) back in April 2018. "It was an incredible privilege and honour to make Paramedics with the dedicated and devoted men and women of the NAS, and I think it’s a true testament to the series, the service and those who worked behind the scenes in TV3 and Tile Films to make it, to see the public’s reaction online and through the countless emails we received in the days and weeks after it’s ending. It was bitter sweet, but we gave the show one hell of a send-off.” King told IFTN

News broke earlier this week that all three seasons of ‘Paramedics’ will air in the UK and international territories on Sky Witness (formerly Sky Living). "For me, and the team who worked so damn hard on the production for over four years, there is no greater pay off then knowing your programmes are being watched by millions of new viewers on a primetime slot in the UK… it’s truly incredible!”

Rob left his post of almost a decade as a Series Producer / Director with Virgin Media Television (TV3) in October this year and since then has been working hard to make a name for himself in the UK. "Making the move was quite daunting both personally and professionally, but I knew it was the right move for me, it was time for change, time for a new challenge and above all, I wanted to give it a go! The UK is a very busy TV market, there is of course, many broadcasters and production companies and equally even more people to fill the jobs to which I’ve been extremely lucky to have made great working relations within the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 since I arrived. But fell in love with the concept of making a crazy series on the insane world of mega air freight shipping, a highly pressurised environment, with time critical, large scale and often extremely precious cargos!”

Working with the UK based company, Rob and his team have been travelling across the UK and the world capturing everything from priceless vintage cars and exotic animal imports to aircraft wings and lifesaving drugs being urgently shipped around the world. “It’s been an eye opening experience so far and capturing the fast turn-around and often mind blowing world of the air cargo industry and how little we, the public, know about what crosses our skies every day in giant cargo aircraft or what flies beneath us when we travel on a commercial flight, it’s quite extraordinary, but you’ll have to wait and see!”

Rob did tell IFTN that he hopes to add a very Irish element to the series too, “I can’t say much right now, but as an Irishman, it’d be wrong of me not to try and wedge a very Irish story or two into the series and showcase our own country on an international stage”

Commenting on the future Rob said, “It’ll be a busy few months ahead, and I’ll continue to work between the UK and Ireland thereafter, and indeed anywhere the story takes me… but for now, I’m extremely excited about this new chapter and when it comes to a show about air cargo… things can only look up!”

The new 8-part series is due to air in late 2019.
