As the Hollywood Foreign Press Association prepares for the Golden Globes ceremony this Sunday Night in Hollywood, IFTN is rounding up this year’s Irish hopefuls and their competition for this year’s awards.
A number of this year’s Irish nominations have been tipped to be in with a considerable chance of leaving with an award. The most likely of which may be Martin McDonagh as his film ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’ earned one of the highest nomination tallies at last month’s announcements. Two of those being for Best Screenplay and Best Director, as well as Best Film, which was already picked up at the Toronto Film Festival late last year.
Saoirse Ronan is another who has become a favourite to pick up her first Golden Globe for her critically acclaimed performance in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’. The possibility of a third Oscar nomination at the age of 23 is also looking increasingly likely.
Another Irish Actress in contention is ‘Outlander’ star Caitriona Balfe who picked up her third Golden Globe nomination this year for Best Female Lead in Drama. However, the competition is stiff with Claire Foy (‘The Crown’), Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Deuce’), Katherine Langford (’13 Reasons Why’), and Elisabeth Moss (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’) all competing in the category.
The Irish Animation industry continues to go from strength to strength with Nora Twomey and Cartoon Saloon’s ‘The Breadwinner’ garnering international acclaim, as it picked up a number of awards late last year and is expected to earn the studio its third Oscar nomination this year. Again, the category has plenty of competition with ‘Coco’, ‘Ferdinand’, and ‘Loving Vincent’ all earning praise internationally.
An ever-present at award ceremonies, Belfast based ‘Game of Thrones’ has garnered another Golden Globe nomination following its record breaking seventh season, which aired in the summer of 2017. The season finale was watched by 16.5 million viewers, 12.1 of which watched as it aired - making it the most-watched episode in series history.
