‘Barbarians Rising’ Nominated for News & Documentary Emmy Award
27 Jul 2017 : Katie McNeice
The nominees for the 38th Annual Awards were announced this week, with Irish director of photography Richard Kendrick nominated as part of the ‘Barbarian Rising’ team for Outstanding Lighting Direction and Scenic Design.

Also nominated alongside Kendrick are production designer Richard Touch, fellow DoP Gary Clarke, set designer Lora Venkova and set dressers Daniel Emart and Svetlozar Petrov.

There are forty-nine categories in total, with ‘Blood and Fury: America's Civil War’, ‘CNN Heroes’ (The 10th Annual CNN HEROES All-Star Tribute), CNN Original Series (The Hunt with John Walsh: Sex Slaves in Texas) and National Geographic’s ‘Facing’ (Facing Putin) nominated alongside the ‘Barbarian Rising’ team.

Bob Mauro, President, NATAS:

“Many say we’re in a ‘golden age’ of television and I would argue that the incredible growth of quality, in-depth reporting in broadcast journalism and documentary filmmaking has helped drive that change. We live in a continually-connected world where a tweet can set off a firestorm that travels around the world in seconds.

“These awards are a tribute to the outstanding work being done by these nominees who provide the viewer with thorough, fact-checked reporting, examining the stories of the day from multiple perspectives while never wavering in their quest to provide us with the truth about world events. It is with great pleasure that The National Academy honors the achievements of these many organizations and individuals.”

Four episodes of the ‘Barbarians Rising’ series were directed by Irish talent Maurice Sweeney (Trial of the Century), with the series telling the epic story of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, from the perspective of the barbarian leaders who brought it down.

The series is produced by October Films for the History Channel, with Kate Bullions as producer.

Kendrick’s previous work includes ‘Song of Granite’ (Pat Collins), opening film at the recent 2017 Galway Film Fleadh and feature debut ‘The Lodgers’ (Brian O’Malley), which recently landed a slate of distribution deals with Epic Pictures. He was nominated by the Irish Academy in 2012 for his work on television series ‘Two for the Road’ (Alan Gilsenan).

Winners will be announced Thursday, October 5th, 2017
