‘Nancy Corrigan - 'Spéirbhean Acla'’, a documentary about an Irish woman who emigrated from poverty in Achill in Ireland to America and became one of the first female pilots, will air on TG4 on Tuesday, January 6th at 9.30pm.
Produced and directed by Gillian Marsh of GMarsh TV, Nancy Corrigan 'Spéirbhean Acla' was a BAI funded project, shot over the course of a year in County Mayo, Cleveland Ohio and Tulsa Oklahoma. Principal photography was by Richard Kendrick and Colm Hogan with Jill Beardsworth editing and Egg Post Production taking care of the post production.
The documentary is presented by Nancy’s relative Bernadette Masterson who goes on a personal journey of her own as she discovers more about her ancestor who left Achill in 1929 to live in Cleveland, Ohio where she became interested in becoming a pilot. To fund her flying lessons, Nancy moved to New York and began modelling for the prestigious Powers Agency which had a number of Hollywood starlets on their books. She went on to instruct male cadets how to fly during WWII and obtained virtually every aviation certificate known at the time.
Interviews recorded in the interview include Nancy’s 80 year old nephew Bart Kilbane, Pilot Bill Witt, who was trained by Nancy; Nan Gaylord, pilot and former Powers model and Kim Jones, aviation historian in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
‘Nancy Corrigan 'Spéirbhean Acla'’ will air on TG4 at 9.30pm on Tuesday, January 6th, the night of Oíche Nollag na mBan (Women’s Christmas).
