‘The Siege of Jadotville’, ‘Sing Street’ & more in Contention for Best Picture Oscar

The Reminder List of feature films eligible for a nomination in the Best Picture category in the upcoming 89th Academy Awards include 336 titles, with Irish talent featured in homegrown and international projects alike.

Official nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 24th 2017, with the ceremony taking place on Sunday February 26th.

John Carney’s ‘Sing Street’ features on the list of eligible projects as does debut feature ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ from Richie Smith, starring Jamie Dornan (The Fall).

‘Angry Birds’ co-directed by Irish talent Fergal Reilly is also listed, and is also one of twenty-seven projects submitted under the Animated Feature category.

Whit Stillman’s period comedy ‘Love & Friendship’ starring Kate Beckinsale (Underworld: Blood Wars) is also eligible for a nomination, as is co-production ‘The Lobster’ starring Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).

Also Featuring Irish Talent
Michael Fassbender boasts leading roles in three eligible titles, with ‘Assassins’ Creed’ (Justin Kurzel), Assassin’s Creed, The Light Between Oceans (Derek Cianfrance) and X-Men Apocalypse (Bryan Singer).

Ruth Negga stars in both ‘Loving’ (Jeff Nichols) and Warcraft (Duncan Jones), while ‘Taken’ star Liam Neeson features in both ‘Silence’ (Martin Scorsese) and upcoming fantasy film ‘A Monster Calls’ (J. A. Bayona). Neeson received an Outstanding Contribution to Cinema award from the Irish Film & Television Academy this year.

WWII drama ‘Anthropoid’ starring both Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) is listed alongside two major projects from cinematographer Robbie Ryan this year; ‘American Honey’ and ‘I, Daniel Blake.

‘Ben-Hur’ also features, produced by Irish talent Roma Downey, who also received the inaugural Diaspora Award from IFTA earlier this year.

Colin Farrell (True Detective) stars as Percival Graves in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’ with young talent Art Parkinson (Game of Thrones) voicing the lead character of Kubo in animation ‘Kubo and the Two Strings.’  

Irish post production company Screen Scene also completed VFX on ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ from Roland Emmerich.

In more minor roles, the following projects also feature supporting talent:

  • Bleed for This (Ciaran Hinds)
  • Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Chris O’Dowd)
  • Money Monster (Catriona Balfe)
