08 Apr 2021 : News Desk
Multi Camera drama directors training course
RTÉ, with the support of Screen Skills Ireland, is looking to run a training course for 4 multi-camera Drama Directors who will go through a structured training programme to prepare them to direct episodes on RTÉ’s ongoing drama Fair City.

Directors work to the Executive Producer and the Series Producer and will be a key part of the team leading cast and crews through the production process. Because of the nature of ongoing drama there is a rigorous approach to story, script, scheduling, and a formulated method of production.

Directors are asked to bring original thinking to the production and be part of the ever evolving nature of serial television drama production.

Successful candidates must have previous professional experience directing performance in theatre, video, TV, or film. The emphasis of the course is to train directors with drama, comedy, and performance experience to direct in a multi-camera studio environment.

Screen Skills Ireland are looking for candidates who have a creative imagination and a rigorous work ethic. This initiative is part funded by the TV Drama Stimulus Fund.

A professional working knowledge of directing actors for performance and a high appreciation and knowledge of soaps and serial drama will be expected as well as a proven ability to interpret a script and lead a crew.

Successful candidates will undergo a 12-day classroom, studio, location, and editing training programme followed by a five-week shadow directing period and, if successful, a five-week mentored directing period in preparation to become a regular director on RTÉ’s 200-episode-a-year soap.

The training course will commence in mid-June 2021 and run for 12 days. Successful applicants must be available to attend the complete course.  They must also be available to attend the shadowing and mentored cycles, which may take place up to the end of 2021 preparing the candidate to take up the role of director.

Those interested can apply by submitting a cover letter, your Curriculum Vitae outlining your suitability for the role, and a Vimeo link to your showreel. The showreel should include examples of previous drama directing work (please attach all as one document when submitting your online application).

Applications can be submitted through the RTÉ website – here.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, April 16th at 5pm.
