Application Deadline Extended for Three Galway Film Fleadh Masterclasses

The deadlines for three of this year’s masterclasses, which take place at the Galway Film Fleadh next week, have been extended.

This year, the Fleadh welcomes director Madeleine Olnek, Actor Andrew Scott, and writer Ed Solomon to Galway, with each set to host a special masterclass in their own professional field.

 

The extended deadlines are as follows:

  • Director’s Masterclass with Madeleine Olnek (Cost:€25): Open until 1p.m. Wednesday July 11th
  • Screenwriting Masterclass with Ed Solomon (Cost:€50):  Open until 1p.m. Thursday July 12th
  • Actor’s Masterclass with Andrew Scott (Cost:€25):  Open until 1p.m. Friday July 13th

Director’s Masterclass

The Director’s Masterclass with Madeleine Olnek takes place at the Galmont Hotel on Thursday, July 12th at 10am and runs until 1pm. Olnek is a New York City based playwright and filmmaker. Her debut feature ‘Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same’ premiered at Sundance 2011. It went on to screen at MoMA and The Viennale. It was also nominated for a Gotham award and had a theatrical run in LA and NYC. She was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for her third feature film, ‘Wild Nights With Emily’, which premiered at SXSW in 2018. Olnek was also awarded best female short film director at Sundance in 2009, by LA’s Women In Film organisation. Her award-winning and widely screened comedy shorts, ‘Countertransference’ (2009), and ‘Hold Up’ (2006) were official selections of Sundance. 

The director’s masterclass will be moderated by Gar O’Brien – (Former Festival Programmer for Galway Film Fleadh) 

Olnek’s ‘Wild Nights with Emily’ will screen on Wednesday 11th July as part of this year’s Galway Film Fleadh programme.  Click here for tickets. 

Screenwriter’s Masterclass

The Screenwriter’s Masterclass with Ed Solomon takes place at the Galmont Hotel on Friday, July 13th at 10am and runs until 1pm. Solomon began his career in his teens as a joke writer, playwright, and stand-up comedian. He was hired (while still in college at UCLA) as a staff writer on ABC TV’s hit comedy show ‘Laverne and Shirley’, which made him the youngest member of the Writers’ Guild at the time. He went on to write hundreds of episodes of television and dozens of feature films, both credited and uncredited. His film credits include the critical and box office hits ‘Men in Black’, ‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure’, ‘Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey’, ‘Now You See Me 1 & 2’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’, ‘X-Men’ (uncredited), and many others.  

The screenwriter’s masterclass will be moderated by Mary Kate O’Flanagan, an award-winning screenwriter and story consultant in the European film and television industry. 

Solomon’s ‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ will screen on Saturday 14th July at 10:45pm followed by Q+A. Click here for tickets. 

Actor’s Masterclass

The Actor’s Masterclass with Andrew Scott takes place at the Galmont Hotel on Saturday, July 14th at 9am and runs until 12pm.  Scott is a much-acclaimed Irish actor, who has starred in a diverse array of projects across film, TV and theatre. Andrew has starred in a vast number of successful feature films. Recent work includes ‘Denial’, starring alongside Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall; ‘Spectre’ from the James Bond franchise; ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ with Johnny Depp, Ken Loaches ‘Jimmy’s Hall’, as well as his acclaimed role in hit British film ‘Pride’ for which he received the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. 

His forthcoming films include ‘The Delinquent Season’ with Cillian Murphy and ‘Steel Country’, his first American independent film. He is perhaps best known on television for his role as Moriarty in the international hit series ‘Sherlock’, for which he was awarded the BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor. Other television credits include ‘The Hollow Crown’, ‘The Town’, ‘The Hour’, ‘John Adams’ and ‘Band of Brothers’.

The actor’s masterclass will be moderated by Maureen Hughes – Maureen trained as an artistic assistant under Garry Hynes at Druid Theatre Company in the ’80s and went on in 1992 to work in the Abbey Theatre for two-and-a-half years as Head of Casting.

Andrew’s latest film, ‘Steel Country’, will screen on Friday 13th July at 9pm. Click here for tickets
