2017-03-21 9:00:00 : Katie McNeice
The 2017 nominees in this category see feature film debuts from Peter Foott (The Young Offenders) and both Darren Thornton and Colin Thornton (A Date for Mad Mary), with a third feature from Kevin Brodbin (The Siege of Jadotville) and a second from Juanita Wilson (Tomato Red).

Wilson previously received both Best Director and Best Script IFTA nominations in 2011 for ‘As If I Am Not There’, taking home the award for the former on the night.

Each of the projects associated with the Best Script in Film nominations this year is also nominated for Best Film, with Darren Thornton and Foott also nominated for Best Director in Film.

The 2017 IFTA Film & Drama Awards ceremony takes place on Saturday, April 8th at the Mansion House, Dublin.

Kevin Brodbin, The Siege of Jadotville
Also known for ‘Constantine’ (Francis Lawrence) and ‘Mindhunters’ (Renny Harlin), Brodbin’s latest work for the screen is ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ (Richie Smyth).

With it he has helped to bring to into the public domain the real-life story of the 1961 battle between Irish UN troops and French and Belgian mercenaries in the Congo.

Kevin Brodbin, Screenwriter:
“This was a rip-roaring story about the underdog that had a great universal sense to it. It’s not about our grandfathers' or great grandfathers' grudges; this was a thing all Irish people could be interested in because it’s a universal story. That’s what got me into it.”

‘The Siege of Jadotville’ is produced by Alan Moloney of Parallel Films. Read our full interview with Brodbin here.

Peter Foott, The Young Offenders
With experience as a director, writer alike predating ‘The Young Offenders’, Foott was best known for his work on ‘The Republic of Telly’ before penning one of the most successful Irish comedies to date.

Foott’s script has brought him as much acclaim as his skill in the director’s chair, with a standout festival run and release in the last twelve months, gaining him praise such as the following from Carnaby International Sales & Distribution:

Lorianne Hall, Senior Manager, Sales and Acquisitions:
“Being a fan of Irish film, and Irish humour in particular, I was automatically drawn to the film. I was familiar with Peter’s show Republic of Telly and knew that the film would be funny but when I saw it, it wasn’t just funny, it was brilliant. I knew it was going to be a hit.”

‘The Young Offenders’ is produced by Foott and Julie Ryan with funding from the Irish Film Board.

Darren Thornton & Colin Thornton, A Date for Mad Mary
‘A Date for Mad Mary’ starring Seána Kerslake began as a one-woman stage show written and performed by Yasmine Akram and directed by Darren Thornton of Calipo Theatre Company.

‘A Date for Mad Mary’ sees Mary McArdle (Kerslake) struggle with her emotions and devolving relationships once released from prison, as she instead channels her energy on finding a date for her friend’s wedding.

The pair collaborated on bringing the play to the big screen, marking feature debuts for them both. They previous collaborated on short film ‘Two Hearts’ in 2011, which also explores prison themes as a young woman Lorna (Roxanna Nic Liam) finds herself drawn back to her recently released ex-boyfriend.

‘A Date for Mad Mary’ is produced by Juliette Bonass and Ed Guiney of Element Pictures.

Juanita Wilson, Tomato Red
Wilson adapted the novel of Daniel Woodrell for the screen in her second feature film, which is produced by Elizabeth Gill and James Flynn of Metropolitan Films/Octagon Films, and Daniel Bekerman for Scythia Films.

‘Tomato Red’ follows drifter Sammy Barlach (Jake Weary) as he and his newfound companions struggle against corruption and justice.
