A new comedy horror film-in the vein of old 50’s and 60’s movies of this popular genre, co written by IFTA award winning writer Pat McCabe (Breakfast on Pluto, The Butcher Boy) and British writer and director Kevin Allen (Twin Town) is currently in pre production in Co. Monaghan. The film is being funded by American Production company Smuggler Films LA
‘Flat Lake’ follows the peculiar activities of Sir Charles Wimsgrove who has hatched an eccentric plan to convert the entire surrounding area into some sort of crazy Eden-like paradise. However, his plan is thwarted by local journalist Sinead McSwain, who, with the help of historian, Doctor Guy Bensley, discovers her own unique other-wordly powers that ultimately enables her to put a stop to Wimsgrove’s lunacy.
Most of the filming will take place in Monaghan’s Scotshouse, the grounds of Hilton Park and inside the Hilton mansion house itself, owned by the Madden family.Hilton Park also plays host to the unique annual Flat Lake Literary & Arts festival, organized by Allen & Mc Cabe. Executive producer on the film will be Ben Limberg with Allen producing. Line Producer for the project is Anna O’Malley (Love Eternal, Earthbound).Director of Photography will be Andy Hollis, who has worked on UK comedies such as 'The Office', ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, ‘Smack The Pony’ and ‘Spaced’. The film will be shot using Alexa.
Daithí Magner (Spider Hole, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, The Daisy Chain) will be Production Designer for the feature. The costume designer is Debbie Millington who has worked on such recent projects as 'Moulin Rouge!', ‘Shadow Dancer’, ‘Neverland’ and ‘The Guard’. Emma Farrell (Fran, The Panel) will provide hair and make up.
The micro budget film, which has yet to be cast, starts shooting at the end of January for three weeks in Scotshouse and Clones, Co. Monaghan. Auditions for above the line cast are taking place on Monday 12th December Scotshouse at 8pm in the Community Centre, Tuesday 13th December, 12-4pm at McKenna’s Bar, The Brewery, Monaghan, and at 7pm The Gonzo Theatre, Cavan. An expected release date has yet to be confirmed.
