Sequels to Inside Out and Dune are atop the Irish box office for the past 6 months, as ScreenDaily reports that UK-Ireland box office is down 7% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
IFTN can reveal, as per statistics via Comscore, that Disney Pixar's animated comedy Inside Out 2 has already grossed €5,082,278 since opening in cinemas on June 14th, putting it firmly in first place as the highest grossing film of 2024 in Ireland to date.
In second place is another sequel: Warner Bros and Legendary's Dune: Part 2 starring Timotheé Chalamet and Zendaya has earned €3,356,461. The sci-fi epic, directed by Denis Villeneuve, opened on March 1st. The film's cast also includes Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Irish actor Steve Wall in a small role.
Two more animated hits are in third and fourth place, respectively: Migration and Kung Fu Panda 4, both released by universal. Migration - from Illumination Entertainment of Despicable Me and Minions fame - opened in February and has grossed €2,185,952. DreamWorks Animation's fourth Kung Fu Panda films, featuring the voice of Jack Black, is narrowly behind with €2,098,877.
In fifth place is Bob Marley biopic One Love, released by Paramount in mid-February, which earned €1,348,851.
In sixth, seventh and eighth place are the latest entries in three reliable franchises: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire earned €1,310,406; Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes earned €1,265,479; Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned €1,263,302.
Universal's Despicable Me 4 was released last Friday July 12th, and has already entered the top 10 with €1,263,302 at time of publication.
In tenth place is Sony's Bad Boys: Ride or Die, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, with €1,140,345.
The total box office for UK and Ireland for January-June this year was £451.6m, compared to £486.6m in 2023.
A smaller slate of tentpole films following last year's actor and writer strikes in Hollywood may be to blame for this: after leading box office charts for much of the past fifteen years, there are notably no comic-book movies in this top 10 chart, although Disney and Marvel Studios will release Deadpool & Wolverine later in July, and Warner Bros will return to the Joker franchise with a sequel due in October.
Further high profile blockbusters such as Twisters, Gladiator II and Wicked should also give the box office a boost for the rest of 2024. See the full box office top 10 for the year so far below:
