Celtic Media Festival takes place in Gaeltacht for first time
06 Jun 2023 : News Desk
The festival is taking place in An Clochán Liath (Dungloe) in county Donegal June 6th - 8th, the first time the festival has come to the Gaeltacht.

For over forty years, the Celtic Media Festival has been bringing together media professionals from the Celtic nations and regions, promoting the language, culture and talent of those nations and regions.

The festival is taking place in Dungloe’s Waterfront Hotel.

Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, Director of Community, Regional and Language Development with Údarás na Gaeltachta said of the festival’s arrival to the Gaelteacht: “We are very happy that the Festival has come to the Gaeltacht this year; the media industry is particularly important to the Gaeltacht and to the Irish language, due to the significant employment the sector provides and to the central role of Irish language media in the preservation and rejuvenation of the Irish language.”

“In recent years, Irish language films have placed Ireland on the international stage,” he added. “This is due to the skill and creativity of those working in the industry, and also to the consistent support and investment by state agencies, including Údarás na Gaeltachta, in the development of the industry in Ireland. During this year’s Festival we will have the opportunity to celebrate that worldwide recognition, and to develop opportunities for collaboration and cooperation with our Celtic neighbours. We wish Féile na Meán Cheilteach 2023 all the best.”

The programme begins on June 6th with a coastal tour of the Northwest Donegal Gaeltacht, a part of the Wild Atlantic Way touring route, followed by an opening ceremony where the following categories for the Torc Awards will be announced: Current Affairs (Screen), Animation (Screen), Comedy (Sound), Sports, Documentary (Screen), Entertainment (Screen), Short Drama (Screen), Drama (Sound) and History (Sound). The first day of the festival concludes with the CMF Opening Party with Raidió na Gaeltachta, celebrating 50 years of the Irish language radio station.

Day two offers a variety of events including a pitching forum, panels on documentary filmmaking and screenwriting, and diversity in the film industry. The Torc Awards continue with the following categories being awarded: Factual Entertainment (Screen), History (Screen), Sports Programme (Sound), Comedy (Screen), Factual Series (Sound), Entertainment (Sound), Live Music Programme (Screen), and Children’s Programme (Screen).

The pitching competition continues on the final day of the festival, and panels include a talk with director Lee Haven Jones, producer-screenwriter Roger Williams about their Wesh folk horror film Gwledd. The night will conclude with the final categories of the Torc Awards being awarded.
