Screen Ireland
Applicants seeking opportunities in Film & TV may apply to the Film, TV Drama, TV Unscripted & Documentary Pathways Fund, and those seeking opportunities in animation may apply to the Animation Pathways Fund.

Screen Ireland and Atlantic Academy have announced that €300,000 has been allocated for the Film, TV Drama, TV Unscripted & Documentary Pathways Fund 2023. A fund of €100,000 has also been allocated for the Animation Pathways Fund 2023.

The respective funds will be used to provide inclusive opportunities on animation productions, and inclusive above and below-the-line opportunities on film and television productions. These opportunities are being aimed at participants from diverse and under-represented communities and those where access to the industry would historically be limited.

Additionally, this year’s Film & TV Drama Pathways Fund will also welcome applications from producers and production companies seeking to provide inclusive opportunities on documentary or non-scripted TV productions, in addition to film and television drama productions.

To date, 11 production companies have availed of this funding scheme to provide opportunities on productions to 29 participants from diverse and traditionally under-represented backgrounds. Participants were supported across a wide variety of feature film and TV drama series productions including Screen Ireland-funded projects such as season 2 of KIN, political thriller Baltimore, crime drama Twig, and upcoming TV drama series Obituary. Other productions include Irish-Canadian co-production SisterS, the Paramount+ period thriller The Doll Factory, and Netflix’s dark-comedy drama On Record.

In 2022, the Animation Pathways Fund supported opportunities for Ukrainian refugees residing in Ireland seeking to transition to the animation sector. Three participants were supported on the production of Distillery Films’ Sullivan Sails, gaining work experience in project development, storyboarding, animation, design, and FX. Additionally, the scheme also supported Ukrainian animation director Olha Yevtieieva to further develop her original concept Crunch Crunch Farm for Irish audiences.

“We are delighted to be working with Screen Ireland on Pathways again in 2023. The initiative has been a tremendous success to date and offers wonderful opportunities for people with an interest in working in the screen industries,” said Siobhán Ní Ghadhra, CEO of Danú Media and Atlantic Academy.

Ronan McCabe, CEO of Animation Ireland added: “It has been great to have the opportunity to increase access to the animation sector for people from more diverse backgrounds and even better that this scheme is being continued. This is an important initiative and our industry will continue to strive to give voice to the traditionally under-represented.”

Gareth Lee, Head of Skills & Professional Development at Screen Ireland, said: “Screen Ireland is committed to building an inclusive screen sector that is accessible for all. The extension of this key funding initiative with our partners Atlantic Academy, will support and empower productions to offer more opportunities for diverse creative talent to become involved in the screen industry. The continuation of the Pathways scheme for animation will support greater access to the sector for creative talent from a diverse range of backgrounds. Screen Ireland looks forward to working with Animation Ireland to create more inclusive opportunities for all.”

Applications are welcome for proposals that address the following in particular:

  • Opportunities for under-represented participants wishing to transition from other sectors.
  • Opportunities for those who wish to return to the Film & TV or Animation sector after a period of absence.
  • Opportunities for refugees seeking to transition to the Film & TV or Animation sector.
  • Gender and diversity balance in specific departments and roles where gender and diversity would historically be skewed.
  • Opportunities that offer significant career advancement opportunities for participants in priority areas where significant skills gaps exist or where significant barriers to taking on this opportunity exists.

Through the Film, TV Drama, TV Unscripted & Documentary Pathways Fund, producers and production companies can apply for a funding award of up to €20,000 per production/project in 2023. Through the Animation Pathways Fund, producers and production companies can apply for a funding award of up to €10,000 per production/project in 2023. More than one application per annum per producer/company is allowed.

A higher funding award may be considered if the production is offering exceptional ED&I opportunities (subject to review by the awarding panel).

The maximum allowance for the Film, TV Drama, TV Unscripted & Documentary Pathways Fund is €40,000 per annum per producer/company. The maximum allowance for the Animation Pathways Fund is €20,000 per annum per producer/company.

Projects awarded funding must commence production before 31st December 2023.

Both Pathways Funds will be open throughout 2023 until the total fund is fully expended.
