Funding decisions announced for Irish Language Broadcast Fund

Irish Language Broadcast Fund
Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) has announced its latest funding decisions for 2020.

Funding was awarded across a wide genre of TV and online content with a total of 16 projects receiving funding.

The aims of the ILBF is to promote the production and broadcast of quality Irish language content for an audience in Northern Ireland and beyond and to help grow the Irish language production sector in Northern Ireland. 

Some of the funded projects in the second funding round of 2020 include:

In Macha Media’s factual entertainment series Buachaillí ón Éirne, we’ll see old friends Cormac Ó hAdhmaill and Antaine Ó Donnaile undertake a kayaking adventure, which will be challenging, inspiring and more than one hundred miles long.

For young audiences, Paper Owl Films will explore the almost forgotten story of Lí Ban, brought to life in a contemporary mixed-media retelling aimed to captivate the 8-12 year old age category on TG4. The magic continues with Dee Dee The Little Sorceress, a reversion animation from Zoogon where young children will be introduced to cheerful Dee Dee who has found a magic book of spells in the back of a cupboard and An tSnáthaid Mhór will bring Máire Zepf’s popular book series Rita to life.

Ar an Sliabh, a factual entertainment series from Strident Media will introduce us to the lives and tales of the people living in or near the mountains in contemporary Ireland and will air on both BBC and RTÉ. The company was also awarded funding for an international co-production with Heidefilm called Caoire, which will air on TG4. This delightful programme will explore how the mighty sheep has been responsible for the advancement of human civilisation and will introduce us to sheep from across the globe.

Below the Radar’s An Focal Scoir returns to BBC NI for a fifth series with in-depth studio discussion, analysis and debates. Once again, they’ll be shining a light on some of the issues, challenges and dilemmas facing home and families across Ireland.

Former President Mary McAleese will explore the impact of partition on ordinary lives and communities, a century after the creation of Northern Ireland in feature documentary Críochdheighilt le Mary McAleese, which will be produced by DoubleBand Films.

Presenter Doireann Ní Ghlacáin will embark on a quest to unearth answers to enigmas and mysteries surrounding her late grandfather, one of Ireland’s most important cultural icons, Seán Ó Riada , a Táin Media production for TG4.

For BBC NI, Sonas Productions’ Ar Scáth an Cheoil will showcase a series of music that combines the most significant traditional and folk music archive along with live performances from top folk and traditional artists.

Red Shoe Productions’ Gradam Ceoil will also return to our screens celebrating the very best of traditional music and song from across the globe through their annual televised awards ceremony on TG4.

Raidió Fáilte has been awarded funding to continue their successful training and broadcasting scheme.
