Since leaving Virgin Media Television for the UK last year, Irish Series Producer / Director Rob King has enjoyed a successful start to life abroad and speaks exclusively to IFTN about completing an adventurous new eight-part air cargo series and his new move to the BBC.

In September 2018, the Dublin born series producer/director, who is best known for the popular documentary series ‘Paramedics’, made the bold move from the Ballymount broadcaster to the UK.

Since then he has become well-established in the British broadcasting industry, having recently completed a new eight-part air shipping series for UKTV / Discovery, which has led to interest from the BBC.

‘Mega Air’ completed filming in April and follows the weird and wonderful world of air freight shipping and the crazy cargos that traverse our skies every day.

"Over the 6 month production, the crew and I tirelessly trekked thousands of miles across 18 countries, from catching salmon in the Arctic circle and getting them to sushi bars in Japan in a day, or exclusively capturing the intense scramble to ship multimillion pound formula 1 cars from their test track in Barcelona to the Melbourne grand prix in Australia, even following 747’s full of flowers destined for Holland from Africa ahead of the global Valentine’s day rush, the series truly does have a global appeal ... which is both fun and utterly bonkers!”, King told IFTN.

Despite the series seeing Rob and his team circumnavigate the global, he was determined to instil a very Irish element within the adventurous series.

"It became apparent to me early on that no aviation series would be complete without a touch of Irish brilliance and with the help of the incredible Irish Air Corps, we achieved just that! I can’t say much right now, but the involvement of the Irish Air Corps MAKES the series and is a fascinating insight into the work, capabilities and readiness of our home-grown defence forces on an international stage”

Since production wrapped earlier this year, Rob has been strongly linked with moves to Formula 1 and a new Channel 4 series, but today exclusively confirmed to IFTN that he “landed the perfect Producer/Director job” and has joined the BBC.

"For as long as I have worked in television it has always been my distinct ambition to be part of the BBC and having been given the opportunity to join such a creative, diverse, world leading broadcast powerhouse such as the BBC is an absolute dream come true, and an ultimate career high for me”.

Keeping tight-lipped about the vastly ambitious projects that lie ahead of him with the British public broadcaster, King did hint to the scale of his work.

“The opportunity to produce, direct and collaborate with some of the most well known names, faces and talent from in front of and behind the lens across documentary, drama, live events and entertainment, is both daunting and delighting. I am truly ready for this next big challenge and couldn’t be happier or more excited about this new chapter in my life and career. The team at the BBC have been so very welcoming, immensely professional and incredibly supportive ... I’m just raring to go!”

At just 31, Rob King has already created an impressively vast body of work across hard hitting factual, character driven observational documentaries, relatable entertainment and audience favourite documentaries for millions of global viewers. The ambitious producer/director doesn’t show any signs of slowing down and is definitely an Irishman to keep an eye on in the broadcasting world.

Robs latest series ‘Mega Air’ is set to broadcast in early Autumn 2019.
