Lee Cronin's 'The Hole in The Ground' Secures Distribution Sales in Multiple Territories

Bankside Films has secured a number of international territory sales for Lee Cronin’s ‘The Hole In The Ground’ ahead of its premiere at Sundance in January.

This comes after the news that A24 and DirecTV acquired the North American Distribution rights for the Irish horror-thriller with a coordinated March 2019 release being reported by ScreenDaily.

Other territories where deals have been done include: Latvian Theatrical Distribution for the Baltic States; Weltkino for Germany and Austria; Koch Media for Italy; Festival Films for Spain;  Huashi TV for China; Neo Films for Greece; Indonesia, Malaysia; Thailand and Sahamongkol for Vietnam; Siyah Beyaz for Turkey; Presidio for Japan; Pictureworks for India; Front Row for the Middle East; Captive Entertainment for the Philippines; M2 Film for Poland; Exponenta for Russia; Fox Networks Group for S.E. Asia Pay TV; The Shaw Company for Singapore; Scene & Sound for South Korea; Praesens for Switzerland; Cinepolis for Latin America; and DeepJoy for Taiwan.

Cronin’s debut feature, ‘Hole in The Ground’ stars IFTA nominee Seána Kerslake as Sarah, a mother who moves with her young son Chris (James Quinn Markey) to a country home on the edge of a forest, which happens to hide an enormous sinkhole. Her boy vanishes and soon reappears unharmed, though his behaviour grows increasingly disturbing, leaving his mother to fear the worst — that the boy in her home isn’t her son at all.

A24 will take the film out to theatres while DirecTV will offer a limited pay-per-view window before release. Produced by John Keville and Conor Barry for Irish production company Savage Productions, ‘The Hole in The Ground’ was co-produced by Benoît Roland and Ulla Simonen, and executive produced by Lesley McKimm, Macdara Kelleher, Patrick O’Neill, Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Stephen Kelliher, Hilary Davis, Tim Hegarty, and Tara Finegan.

Leadership at A24 called the film a “remarkable debut film, weaving suspense, terror, and supernatural folklore into a richly evocative story about the primal fears of motherhood”, whilst Tim Gibson, vice president of video and application marketing at DirecTV added: “Driven by supernatural horror, this film tests audiences’ fears, self-restraint and willpower”

Speaking about The Hole in the Ground’s Sundance selection, director Lee Cronin:

“It’s a privilege to bring The Hole in the Ground to the Sundance Film Festival for its World Premiere this January. A hell of a lot of extremely talented people worked tirelessly to make the movie a reality, so I’m delighted that its creators, funders and supporters can celebrate the perfect launch-pad in Utah. Personally, I’m excited to bring my horror story to the big screen, and I can’t wait for Irish audiences to see it when it’s released in cinemas in the New Year.”

The film is presented in association with Screen Ireland, Bankside Films, Head Gear Films and Metrol Technology, The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Wallimages, Voo & BETV, and The Finnish Film Foundation, and in co-production with Wrong Men and Made. Bankside negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

An Irish release date for ‘The Hole in The Ground’ is yet to be announced, but is expected in early 2019.
