There were Irish wins across all five categories at the first of 2017’s prestigious Torc Awards announced on day one of the 38th Annual Celtic Media Festival held this year in Douglas, Isle of Man.
It was the first of four award ceremonies held at the Villa Marina which will take place over the course of the three day festival on the island from 3rd-5th May 2017.
The Irish winners and their projects included; Best Current Affairs for RTÉ Investigates - Standards in Public Office programme, TG4’s fun-packed science series Is Eolaí Mé won Best Children’s Programme, documentary film following the life story of Irish formula one racer Tommy Byrne Crash and Burn won Best Sports Documentary, Best Animation went to Irish animator Vincent Gallagher’s Second to None and Best Entertainment Programme went to RTÉ’s Centenary created and exec produced by Cilian Fennell.
The Celtic Media Festival is one of the most prestigious and long-established TV, radio and media festivals in these islands. It combines a three-day media conference that attracts broadcasters, producers, media and students with a content competition across the full range of TV content genres. Entries go through a national pre-selection phase in each country announced in February with the winners advancing to the international Festival.
Day two’s Awards on Thursday 4th May will take place from 4pm and will be announced across the following categories Single Drama, Factual Entertainment, History, Short Drama, Radio Comedy and Radio Sport.
Irish nominees within these categories include; Irish Director James Doherty’s Short Film Breathe which is up for Best Short Drama, Independent Pictures Big Week On The Farm is nominated for Best Factual Entertainment and Eoin Mac Néill: Fear Dearmadta 1916 produced by Doubleband Films which was broadcast on both BBC NI and TG4 is up for Best History.
This year’s Festival takes place in the Isle of Man for the first time in its 38 year history.
