IFTN chats to ‘Peter Rabbit’ Sound Supervisor Steve Maher
2017-03-28 9:00:00 :
Following the Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Mixing for his team’s work on ‘Peter Rabbit: The Tale Of The Unexpected Discovery’, we catch up with Head of Audio in Mutiny Post, Steve Maher.

IFTN: Tell us about your work on ‘Peter Rabbit’

“Peter Rabbit is a household name that stretches to every shore across the world, so needless to say it was an honour for us to be given the opportunity by Brown Bag Films to provide our sound editing and mixing on these beloved stories. We wanted to create a sound bed that supported the soft, organic and natural feel of the stories. Sometimes the more subtle, natural sounds are a lot harder to create than the heavily sound designed projects, so it was a big challenge for myself and the team.

“It’s a particularly foley intensive series, and to assist in developing the characters individual sounds, we worked with one of Ireland’s leading foley artists, Eoghan McDonnell. Every gadget and machine in the world of Peter Rabbit, bar items in McGregor’s house, are kinetic in nature, so when creating sfx in the show, we always had to make sure that there were no electronic sounds. The sound edit team delivered a stunning collection of intricate new sounds that never overpowered the mix. It took time to find a balance that I felt was right for the final mix and to create something that didn’t come across as too harsh or too flat.”

IFTN: Tell us about the episode that’s been nominated

“‘The Tale Of The Unexpected Discovery’ was a truly brilliant episode. The writing, the directing, the animation were all incredible. As it was a double episode at 22 minutes long, we knew there was going to be an enormous amount of foley and editing involved. Sinead Brady, Naomi MacLeod and Tom Slattery delivered a final edit of the highest standard that encapsulated the action and adventure of the story perfectly. At the beginning of that episode, we used various effects, EQ and compression to replicate the true sound of a Super 8 camera and the sound of the onboard microphone as the viewers look through the lens.

There were several other objects in the episode, from everyday furniture to toy trains, bellows and a gramophone, to name but a few. Later in the episode there's a nice kinetic projector and we ended up using some bicycle spokes along with projector flickers and various little squeaks to create a sound bed that worked. Nothing can sound too clean so we always had to try and find a nice middle ground between too rusty and too polished when designing sound for gadgets.

David McCamley (Director) and Erik Vignau (Producer) from Brown Bag Films and Olexa Hewryck (Supervising Producer) from Silvergate Media were a pleasure to work with on the mix. I was so delighted to see David McCamley nominated again for Best Directing for a Preschool Animated Program. There was always a great atmosphere in the studio which made it so much easier to be creative and bring forward good ideas.

IFTN: Tell us what else Mutiny Post have been up to this year

We have a creative and very experienced team in Mutiny Post and this has been another great year for us. We’ve worked on a number incredible projects such as ‘Stinky & Dirty’ (Brown Bag Films), ‘Gridlock’ (Fail Safe Films), ‘Second to None’ (Caboom), ‘In View’ (Underground Studios) and ‘A Terrible Hullabaloo’ (Bowsie Workshop) to name but a few.

Tom Slattery is currently the sound supervisor on ‘Becca’s Bunch’ which is a Jam Media and Nickelodeon animated TV series. The Mutiny Post Production team had the pleasure of casting the entire series and Mutiny Post are handling all voice recordings and full audio post production. Peter Blayney also lent his award winning expertise to a variety of long form projects including ‘Stinky & Dirty’ and was recently the dialogue and sound effects editor on ‘Kevin Roche, The Quiet Architect’ for Wavelength Pictures/Still Films. In the year ahead, we are looking forward to working on a range of new and exciting projects, including the short film ‘Dirt’, produced by Mutiny’s creative team.
