With the IFTA Film & Drama less than three weeks away, we are continuing our focus on the ceremony with a look at the 2016 nominees in the Costume Design category.
And it is a talented line-up indeed with all nominated projects this year being acclaimed period pieces.
Nominated once again for her work in the internationally renowned History Channel television series ‘Vikings’ is Joan Bergin.
Bergin was also nominated for an IFTA in 2014 and 2015 for her work on the show and the decorated costume designer is celebrating her 11th nomination this year. She has won the award three times so far in 2008, 2009 and 2011, all for ‘The Tudors’. ‘The Tudors’ also landed Bergin three Primetime Emmy Awards as well as four nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
Joan served as Costume Designer for Jim Sheridan’s upcoming feature film ‘The Secret Scripture’ and has also worked on the late Alan Rickman’s ‘A Little Chaos’.
Receiving her third nomination this year for RTÉ’s ‘Rebellion’ is Alison Byrne.
In ‘Rebellion’, Byrne has received acclaim for dressing all sides of the 1916 Rising with the Independent stating that the “costumes are exquisite” in the show.
Byrne has previously been nominated for IFTA’s in 2010 and 2013 for ‘Cracks’ and ‘Loving Miss Hatto’, respectively.
Also gunning for IFTA glory on April 9th is ‘Sing Street’ costume designer Tiziana Corvisieri, receiving her first nomination this year.
Corvisieri is a long-time collaborator of John Carney working with him on his television series ‘Bachelors Walk’, his Oscar-winning film ‘Once’ as well as the zany comedy ‘Zonad’.
When reviewing the film, The Hollywood Reporter stated that it was “lavishly costumed” while Variety wrote that “Tiziana Corvisieri wittily charts their accelerated evolution with dead-on approximations of mid-’80s MTV chic — as filtered through the restrictions of economic depression and parent-forced compromise.”
Also receiving her first nomination this year is Triona Lillis for acclaimed Irish Western ‘An Klondike’.
In ‘An Klondike’, Lillis was tasked with dressing gold-hunters in the rough and desolate Yukon region of 1897. Made with a budget of just €1.6 million, the production values of ‘An Klondike’ were hailed by publications such as The Irish Times who stated that they were “sky-high”.
Upcoming projects of Lillis include Irish language series ‘Éirí Amach Amú’ and Fir Bolg.
