Capital Irish Film Festival Accepting Submissions Now
29 May 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The Capital Irish Film Festival (CIFF) is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary Irish films. Founded in 2005, the next festival will run from Thursday January 22nd to Sunday January 25th 2015. The festival is a production of Solas Nua in Washington D.C., a non-profit organisation in the US dedicated to promoting contemporary Irish arts.

The CIFF exhibits new Irish features, documentaries, shorts, animation, and Irish language films, with a special emphasis on showcasing emerging talent in the Irish film industry to American audiences. Now in its ninth year, the CIFF has become one of the biggest Irish film festivals in the US, and shows more Irish language films than any other American film festival.

Some of the films screened at the 2013 festival include recession comedy ‘Life’s a Breeze’ starring Pat Shortt, and psychological thriller ‘Stalker’, directed by Mark O’Connor. Feature documentaries screened included ‘City Wild’, ‘Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey’ and ‘When Ali Came to Ireland’, the latter two being IFTA winners. Award-winning shorts screened include ‘Fear of Flying’, ‘Spot’ and ‘Toy Soldiers’.

Submissions for the next festival are now open with the deadline of June 30, 2014. There is no fee to submit a film, and submissions may be made either online or by post.

To apply online, complete the application form on www.solasnua.org/ciff. All queries may also be sent via this link, or emailed to film@solasnua.org.

To apply by mail, visit www.solasnua.org/ciff to fill out an application form. It should be sent to Pat Reilly, Solas Nua c/o Flashpoint, 916 G Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA with the label ATTN: CIFF on the package. The format should be NTSC* DVD Film Screener for screening purchases. DVDs should be labelled with the name of the film, the director’s name, the length of the film and contact details, including email, phone, and website.

This year, for the first time, a special section for original music and multimedia works will also be included in the CIFF, in association with Solas Nua. Irish composers and media artists can submit pieces to be shown in Washington D.C. in autumn 2014. Selected works may be eligible for a $1500 prize, which is based on audience votes.

Submissions should combine original music and multi-media. They can be made online here. Queries can be sent to Sarah O’Halloran at solasnuamusic@gmail.com. The closing date is August 15 2014.
