'Citadel' Debut at South by South West Festival

‘Citadel’ a psychological horror film by debut feature film director and writer Ciarán Foy (The Faeries of Blackheath Woods) is to have it’s world premiere as part of the Midnighters section at the South by South West festival in Austin, Texas.

The film is an Irish and Scottish co production between Dublin based B!inder Films and Sigma Films is one of the ten films which is to be included in the Midnighters section. ‘Citadel’ tells the story of an agoraphobic father Tommy, who teams up with a renegade priest to save his daughter from a gang of twisted children.

Speaking about the selection Ciarán Foy said, “I’m thrilled to have my world premiere at the renowned South by South West Festival. Traditionally some of the best genre films in the world have come out of South by South West, so to be selected is a real honour."

Starring in the film is Aneurin Barnard (We'll Take Manhattan, Ironclad) in the lead role of Tommy, Scottish BAFTA winner James Cosmo (Braveheart, The Runway) playing the priest, and Wunmi Mosuka (I am Slave, One Night in Emergency) as Marie. Co-stars include Ingrid Craigie (Sensation, Love/Hate) and Amy Shiels (Young Alexander The Great, Love/Hate).

Commenting on the news James Hickey, Chief Executive of the Irish Film Board said,“South by South West has become a festival of significant importance on the international film industry calendar in terms of generating international attention and sales for a film. It is a great achievement for ‘Citadel’, the debut feature film from up and coming Irish filmmaker Ciaran Foy be selected for this prestigious line-up and it will serve as an excellent launch pad for the film.”

’Citadel’s producers were Katie Holly (The Savage Eye, Sensation) of B!inder Films and Brian Coffey (Prefect Sense, Donkeys) of Sigma Films. Executive producers on the project were Gillian Berrie (I Love Luci, Dog Altogether) and Directors Kieron J.Walsh (The Savage Eye, The Basket Case) and David Mackenzie (I Love Luci, Hallam Foe).

Margaret McDonald (Hope Springs, God on Trial) and Cathleen Dore (Whistleblower, My Boy Jack) were the production managers. The Director of Photography was Tim Fleming (Hideaways, As If I Am Not There) who shot ‘Citadel’ in RED.

The shoot took place November to December 2010. It posted at EMC Productions. The film was funded by the Irish Film Board, Creative Scotland, Section 481 and UK Tax Credit.

The South by South West festival runs from the 9th-14th of March.
