Following on from the news that it is to be released across Ireland on June 10th, Ian Power’s ‘The Runway’ is set to get a U.S release later this year as American distribution company Olive Films have picked up the rights to the film.
Written and directed by Ian Power, and inspired by a true story, ‘The Runway’ follows a Columbian pilot who crashed his plane in a field in Co. Cork in 1983 and how a local boy with basic Spanish convinced the town to fix the plane and build a runway. Starring Demian Bichir (Che), Kerry Condon (This Must Be The Place, Rome) and James Cosmo (Outcast) the film is produced by Macdara Kelleher (Colony), Brendan McDonald (The Yard) and Bernard Michaux (Lumen).
The film won the Directors Finders Series which led to him travelling to Los Angeles in October 2010 to meet with distributors, studios and agents at the Directors Guild of America. ‘The Runway’ has already enjoyed much success, winning the best Irish feature award at the Galway Film Fleadh 2010 and an IFTA statuette in the category of Director of Photography for PJ Dillon (Kings).
Speaking about the film’s upcoming US release, producer Macdara Kelleher commented that "The Runway is a feel-good film that really seems to speak to American audiences based on the screenings of the film at festivals so far."
‘The Runway’ will be released across Ireland by Element Pictures from Friday, June 8th and the film will also be released in cinemas in parts of the Middle East, China and Latin America by Mexican company Quality Films later this year with negotiations on-going for Brazil, Argentina, Italy and the U.K with 6 Sales.
