Irish Films Screening at Cannes
12 May 2017 :
The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival begins Wednesday May 17th and runs until Sunday May 28th. Here is a list of the Irish films screening this year.

It’s Not Yet Dark

Screens Sunday 21st May, Doc Corner at 14:00

Directed by Frankie Fenton and made by Kennedy Films ‘It's Not Yet Dark ‘tells the ground breaking story of Simon Fitzmaurice, a talented young Irish film maker with ALS (MND), as he embarks on directing his first feature film through the use of his eyes and eye gaze technology. Narrated by Colin Farrell

HalaI Daddy

Screens Sunday 21st May, Lerins 3 at 18:00

Co-written by Sligo native McDermottroe and Viva screenwriter Mark O’Halloran, Halal Daddy boasts a superb cast, including Nikesh Patel (Indian Summers, London Has Fallen) who stars as lead Raghdan, Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Hell On Wheels), Art Malik (True Lies, Sex and The City 2), Sarah Bolger (Into the Badlands, In America, The Spiderwick Chronicles), Deirdre O Kane (Noble, Intermission), Paul Tylak (The Secret of Kells, Father Ted) and David Kross (The Reader, War Horse). Halal Daddy is a fish out of water story about a loveable outsider, who must decide to embrace or defy his culture in the name of fitting in.

MAZE

Screens Saturday 20th May, Lerins 4 at 09:30 & Tuesday May 23rd, Lerins 3 at 16:00

Directed by Stephen Burke, Produced by Jane Doolan & Brendan J.Byrne and made by Mammoth Films and Cyprus Avenue Films. Filmed in Cork with David Grennan as DoP Maze is inspired by the true events of the infamous 1983 prison breakout of 38 IRA prisoners from HMP, which was to become the biggest prison escape in Europe since World War II. Cast includes Tom-Vaughan-Lawlor, Barry Ward, Martin McCann, Niamh McGrady, Elva Trill, Eileen Walsh and Ross McKinney.

School of Life

Screens Wednesday 17th May, Palais F at 15:30

Directed by Neasa Ní Chianáin & David Rane School of Life also known by it’s previous title In Loco Parentis is a gentle and poignant observational film about the unique Headfort School, outside Kells in County Meath, a home from home for boarders as young as eight years old from as far afield as Korea and Tanzania. The film focuses on two of the longest serving staff members, John and Amanda Leyden, who met as young teachers at the school in the 1970’s and live together on the school grounds.

Twice Shy

Screens Thursday 18th May, Palais D at 15:30 & Saturday 20th May, Palais D at 09:30

Directed by Tom Ryan the micro-budget Irish feature film sees young couple Shane Murray-Corcoran (Stitches) and Iseult Casey (The Middle Finger) faced with a road trip to the UK in order to get an abortion. Ardal O’Hanlon (Handsome Devil) and Pat Shortt (Smalltown) also star in supporting roles in the film, represented by 7&7 Producers’ at Cannes.
