IFTA Gala TV Awards Focus: Irish Language Nominees

The teams behind the following nominations have earned recognition for creating some of the the best Irish language content on the small screen in Ireland.

With TG4 being honoured for 20 years of Irish language broadcasting and the channel’s recently retired Commissioning Director Mícheál Ó’Meallaigh set to receive an IFTA for his Outstanding Contribution to the industry and the Irish language at the upcoming awards on Friday, October 7th, it is clear that TG4 continues to deliver an exceptionally high standard of innovative programming that is popular, distinctive and ambitious.

The winner of the IFTA for Irish Language at the 2015 IFTA Gala TV Awards was ‘Corp is Anam’ from Magamedia.

‘An Klondike’
The first Western ever made in Ireland, ‘An Klondike’ tells the story of the Connolly Brothers; three Irish emigrants who travel from Montana to the Yukon during the Klondike gold rush of the 1890's. Shot in Connemara, Co. Galway, the series is created by Dathaí Keane and written by Keane and Marcus Fleming, with a cast led by Owen McDonnell (Éirí Amach Amú), Dara Devaney (Corp & Anam) and Seán T. Ó’Meallaigh (The Field: Crá sa Chré).

‘An Klondike’ is created by Dathaí Keane and produced by Abú Media. The series took home four of nine nominations at the recent IFTA Film & Drama Awards for Best Script - Drama, Best Actor in a Lead Role in Drama, Best Hair & Makeup and Best Drama.

‘Eipic’
This project is an off-beat low-fi comedy drama focusing on a group of rural Irish teenagers who start a band in an abandoned local post office. Directed by Louise Ní Fhiannachta (Ros na Rún) and written by Mike O'Leary (Misfits), the series features young talents Fionn Foley, Cian Ó'Baoill, Róisín Ní Chéilleachair, Daire Ó'Muirí and Fionnuala Gygax.

This project enjoys a total of three nominations, with additional nominations in the Children’s and Young People’s and Director - Soap and Comedy categories (Louise Ní Fhiannachta). ‘Eipic’ is produced by Magamedia.

‘Fleadh TV’
With a live broadcast over three nights from Fleadh Cheoil in Sligo 2015, this music and entertainment series featured twelve hours of live performance from some of the leading Irish talents in traditional and folk music on TG4, to an audience of 1.1M. Fleadh TV is produced by Gifted Empire.

Fleadh TV received the IFTA for Live Event at the 2015 IFTA Gala TV Awards Ceremony.

‘Ros na Rún’
This long-running Irish soap recently celebrated 21 years on air, and has seen some of Ireland’s most established talents both behind and in front of the camera. Its collection of directors in recent years include Niall Fallon (Red Rock), Trevor Laffey (Fair City) and Marion Ní Loingsigh (Scéal).

Long-term acting talents include Macdara Ó’Fátharta (Tadhg Ó Direáin) and Seán Mistéal (David Ó Laoire). ‘Ros na Rún’ is produced by Eo Teilifís and Tyrone Productions and airs on TG4.
