Irish talent assembles for Marvel & DC blockbusters
07 May 2021 :
Irish talent in DC and Marvel projects.
Marvel Studios welcomed fans back to the cinemas this week alongside a teaser for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU) earlier this week.

The video has been viewed 6.5 million times to date, demonstrating that the MCU is as popular as ever despite killing off series mainstays such as Iron Man and Captain America in the blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.

Upcoming projects in the MCU will also showcase leading Irish talent both in front of and behind the cameras including Killian Scott, Barry Keoghan and Screen Scene VFX. Marvel’s main rivals in the big-budget, comic-book connected universe game is DC Comics (Warner bros) who are also getting in on the act with a number of major Irish stars such as Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Farrell appearing in major roles.

Killian Scott to join Secret Invasion

On Monday, we reported the news that Irish Actor Killian Scott, star of Damnation, Dublin Murders, Ripper Street, andLove/Hate is now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to Deadline's report, Sandymount native Scott is joining Secret Invasion in an unspecified role. The only known characters in the series are being played by Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, who will be reprising the MCU roles of Nick Fury and Talos (From Captain Marvel), respectively.

Scott is the fourth Marvel newcomer cast in Secret Invasion. One Night in Miami breakout Kingsley Ben-Adir will likely be playing a villain in the series. The Crown's Olivia Colman and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke are also part of the all-star cast.

Plot and characters are being kept tightly under wraps but the description suggests that it will follow up on events from Captain Marvel with “the crossover comic event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.” The show is slated to premiere on Disney+ but no date has been confirmed as of yet.

This is another big move for the Dubliner following his roles in US productions such as Damnation and AMC’s upcoming courtroom drama 61st Street in which he was cast as the lead opposite Courtney B. Vance and which being written and produced by BAFTA-winner Peter Moffat.

Secret Invasion sees Scott join Irish actors such as Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, who played Ebony Maw in the Avengers Series, Kerry Condon, who memorably voiced Iron Man/Tony Stark’s Artificial Intelligence in the same series and Barry Keoghan in the upcoming Eternals.

Barry Keoghan in Nomadland director’s Eternals

As part of the phase 4 announcement, Marvel revealed that Eternals, directed by Oscar-winning Nomadland director Chloe Zhao, will release on November 5th of this year.

Irish Actor Barry Keoghan plays Druig in the film, who may or may not be one of the chief villains. His character description reads: “Druig has become withdrawn from the other Eternals because he disagrees with how they've interacted with mankind over the centuries. Aloof and powerful, at times it's hard to determine whether he's friend of foe.”

Eternals stars Richard Madden as Ikaris, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman. Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao directed the movie and worked on the screenplay with Kaz and Ryan Firpo. Eternals will follow the titular characters protecting humanity from the Deviants after the events of Avengers: Endgame

Pierce Brosnan, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Barry Keoghan, and Colin Farrell join DC Universe

Keoghan will also be seen in Marvel’s great rivals the DC Comics Universe soon with a role in The Batman alongside Colin Farrell, making him one of a handful of actors to land both a Warner Bros/DC role, as well as a Marvel one. In The Batman he will play Stanley Merkel in the upcoming film, which is directed by Matt Reeves. In comics, Merkel is Commissioner James Gordon's first partner.

The feature sees Robert Pattinson play Bruce Wayne, aka Batman; Zoe Kravitz play Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman; Paul Dano plays the Riddler; Jeffrey Wright plays Commissioner Gordon; and Colin Farrell in a role as one of Batman’s great nemeses: Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin.

Pierce Brosnan has swapped a tuxedo for a cape as he is lined up to play the role of classic hero Dr. Fate opposite Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam, New Line’s action-adventure project featuring the DC Comics antihero.

Black Adam is the second New Line/DC film following 2019’s critical and commercial hit Shazam!with the two characters, Shazam and Black Adam, being arch-rivals in the DC Universe. The project is headed toward an April start in Atlanta, Georgia.

Brosnan will play Kent Nelson, aka Dr. Fate, a son of an archaeologist who was taught sorcery skills and given the magical Helmet of Fate. The character, created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman, is one of DC’s oldest, having first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics No. 5.

Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson has also been announced as having a key role in DC's upcoming The Flash, which is due to release next year. Jackson is best known for her Role as Erin in Derry Girls, her role is as yet unknown.

The upcoming movie will see Ezra Miller reprise his role of speedster Barry with the film acting as something of a reboot for the World of DC movies. Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton are on board the movie to play their respective versions of Batman in the much anticipated film.

Behind Every Good Hero…

Irish filmmaking talent play an important role behind the scenes on these films too. Ireland’s Screen Scene, who have done incredible VFX  work on Marvel Titles such as Captain Marvel, and more recently the series Wandavision, will next showcase their work on the upcoming Black Widow which is due to release simultaneously in theatres and on Disney+ on July 9th this year.

Screen Scene talent working on Black Widow includes VFX Supervisor Ed Bruce, VFX Executive Producer Eric Kohler, VFX Producer Caoimhe Maguire, VFX Production Manager Diana Cobo-Castrillo, VFX Coordinator Bébhinn Naughton, Compositing Supervisor Sam Johnston, Compositing Lead Andrew Barry, and VFX Production Assistant Adam Keane

Also behind the scenes is DoP PJ Dillon who shot Marvel’s smash hit Captain America follow up The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which recently ended on Disney+

MCU fans were impressed with the cinema-level production values and cinematography when the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier aired in March. Since then, the series led by Anthony Mackie (The Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) continued to impress visually. P.J. Dillon was the man responsible for a lot of those visuals.

With Superheroes seemingly going nowhere we fully expect to see more Irish Talent in front of and behind the scenes in the coming years.
