Q&A - IFTN Caught Up With Dafhyd Flynn Ahead Of the Irish Release of 'Michael Inside'
05 Apr 2018 : Nathan Griffin
It has been a memorable year for the young actor, Dafhyd Flynn. An IFTA Leading Actor & Rising Star nominee earlier this year, Dafhyd made his acting debut in Frank Berry’s first feature film ‘I Use To Live Here’.

Since then, Flynn has shot to prominence following his second big screen performance in Berry’s tense new drama, ‘Michael Inside’, which opens this Friday.

1. What are the best and worst aspects of your work?

“I’d say the best part about acting is becoming someone else, stepping into someone else’s shoes and creating a character in the process, and the worst part about it is wrapping up when the shoots over.”

2. What career do you think you would have if you weren’t in the film/tv industry, and why?

“I wanted to be an architect before hand, but after seeing ‘Michael Inside’ for the first time last summer at the Galway film Fleadh, that’s when I knew I wanted to pursue acting.”

3. When did you last cry watching a film? (Or come close)

“Last time I cried was when I watched my favourite film ‘interstellar’, I find the story line is amazing and very emotional.”

4. What Irish Actor/Director would you most like to work with, and why? (Living or Dead)

“I’d still like to work with Irish director Frank Berry down the line, I’ve known him since I was 12, he is brilliant at what he does, I feel we have a strong understanding of what we both want from each other in each scene, and Irish actor would be Moe Dunford, working with Moe was deadly, one of the greatest actors in my opinion.”

5. What are you most excited about for 2018?

“I am most excited to finish school and begin acting full time hopefully!”

6. Who has really impressed you in the last 12 months in the Irish industry?

“Again I have to say that Frank Berry has. He is always amazing me with his ideas and little details he places into his work, which anyone who goes and sees his work will have the pleasure of enjoying.”

Written and directed by Frank Berry, ‘Michael Inside’ stars Dafhyd Flynn, Moe Dunford and Lalor Roddy and tells the story of Michael McCrea, an impressionable 18-year-old living with his grandfather Francis in a Dublin housing estate, who gets caught holding a bag of drugs for his friend’s older brother and is sentenced to three months in prison.

It premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last summer where it won Best Irish Film and Dafhyd picked up the Bingham Ray New Talent Award.  Since then it’s been wowing audiences and critics alike.  It picked up the Audience Award at the Cork International Film Festival in November; the Best Film Award at the IFTA’s in February and has garnered numerous five-star reviews.

Produced by Donna Eperon, Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan for Subotica and Write Direction Films, the film was made with funding from the Irish Film Board.

Wildcard Distribution will be releasing Michael Inside in Irish cinemas on Friday 6th April 2018.
