17 May 2017 : Katie McNeice
The first trailer has released for Cartoon Saloon’s ‘The Breadwinner’, directed by Nora Twomey.

From the Irish team that brought us not one but two Irish Oscar-nominated feature animations in the form of ‘The Secret of Kells’ and ‘Song of the Sea’, the latest title is sure to yet another success story for the Irish industry.

‘The Breadwinner’ entered production in May 2016 and is a co-production between Aircraft Pictures Canada, Luxembourg’s Melesine Productions and Cartoon Saloon in association with Angelina Jolie’s Jolie Pas Productions.

Producers are Anthony Leo (What’s up Warthogs!), Tomm Moore (Song of the Sea) and Paul Young (Puffin Rock). Executive producers are Angelina Jolie, Mimi Polk Gitlin, Karim Amer, Jehane Noujaim and Gerry Shirren.

‘The Lesser Blessed’ writer/director Anita Doron co-writes the screenplay with Deborah Ellis, based on Ellis’ own novel of the same name, which was published in 2000.

‘The Breadwinner’ follows Parvana, a girl growing up in Afghanistan in 2001. Following her father’s arrest, she dresses as a boy in order to work and provide for her family. Together with her best friend Shauzia, she risks discovery to try to find out if her father is still alive.

Angelina Jolie, Executive Producer:
"I know they will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana. Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution."

Cartoon Saloon also recently announced the upcoming new Light House Studios in Kilkenny, in partnership with the Canadian Mercury Filmworks.
