Element Pictures' 'The Favourite' Leads Charge With 13 British Independent Film Awards Nominations

Element Pictures has received a total of 18 nominations for this year’s British Independent Film awards for Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Favourite’ and Sebastián Lelio’s ‘Disobedience’.

‘The Favourite’ leads the race with 13 nominations including Best Director, Best Film, Best Actor and Best Screenplay. This follows major wins at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year where it scooped the Grand Jury Prize and also for Olivia Colman who won Best Actress.  The BIFA nominations are a fantastic boost for ‘The Favourite’ as it prepares for its North American release later this month through Fox Searchlight with an Irish release set for January 1st.

‘The Favourite’ stars Olivia Colman and Academy Award winners Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone and marks the third collaboration between Element Pictures and visionary director Lanthimos following award-winning films ‘The Lobster’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’.

Speaking with about the nominations, Producer Ed Guiney told IFTN:

These nominations are a major endorsement for both The Favourite and Disobedience and we are thrilled for all the teams involved, they give us great momentum as we head towards our North American release later this month for THE FAVOURITE and our UK/Irish release for DISOBEDIENCE. 

While ‘Disobedience’ has landed 5 nominations at this year’s BIFA’s including Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Actor.

Sebastián Lelio's romantic drama stars Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola. ‘Disobedience’ hits Irish cinemas later this year.

‘The Favourite’ has been nominated in the following categories:

  • Best British Independent Film Yorgos Lanthimos, Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara, Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday
  • Best Director – Yorgos Lanthimos
  • Best Screenplay – Deborah Davis, Tony Mcnamara
  • Best Actress – Olivia Colman
  • Best Supporting Actress – Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz
  • Best Casting – Dixie Chassay
  • Best Cinematography – Robbie Ryan
  • Best Costume Design – Sandy Powell
  • Best Editing – Yorgos Mavropsaridi
  • Best Sound- Johnnie Burn
  • Best Production Design- Fiona Crombie
  • Best Make-Up & Hair Design- Nadia Stacey

 ‘Disobedience’ has been nominated in the following categories:

  • Best Actress- Rachel Weisz
  • Best Supporting Actress- Rachel McAdams
  • Best Supporting Actor- Allessandro Nivola
  • Best Screenplay- Sebastián Lelio & Rebecca Lenkiewicz
  • Best British Independent Film- Sebastián Lelio, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Ed Guiney, Frida Torresblanco, Rachel Weisz

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in London on Sunday, December 2nd

‘The Favourite’ is written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara and is produced by Ed Guiney and executive produced by Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures. Other producers include Ceci Dempsey, Lee Magiday and Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is an Element Pictures/Scarlet Films production for Fox Searchlight, Film4 and Waypoint.
