Irish Talent at the Newport Beach Film Festival

'Aerial Ireland'
In addition to the Irish Spotlight stream at the upcoming festival which runs from April 20th–27th, including ‘A Date for Mad Mary’, ‘The Secret Scripture’ and ‘Tomato Red’, a strong contingent of Irish projects can also be seen in the wider programme.

A further eight feature projects are set to screen, including the incredible ‘Aerial Ireland’ narrated by Venetia Quick from director/producer Stephen Rooke. The stunning footage of Ireland aired on be3 this January to celebrate the launch of TV3 Group’s newest channel.

‘Between Land and Sea’ from documentarist Ross Whitaker is an observational feature filmed in Lahinch, Co. Clare following the area’s community of surfers over the course of a year, both on season and off. It is produced by Jamie D'Alton (The Gambler) and Anne McLoughlin (I Am Immigrant) of Motive Television.

‘Elián’ is yet another documentary title set to screen and is also one of several Irish projects heading to Tribeca 2017. Directed by Tim Golden and Ross McDonnell, ‘Elián’ explores the story of Cuban boy Elián González who was found floating through the Florida Straits on Thanksgiving Day, 1999. Alex Gibney of Fine Point Films produces. 

Wrapping up the list of documentary titles is ‘Strange Occurrences in a Small Irish Village’ from Aoife Kelleher, which examines the activity around the Knock shrine in Co. Mayo and is produced by Rachel Lysaght.

‘Cardboard Gangsters’ from Mark O’Connor will also screen, having recently scooped up awards at the Manchester Film Festival for Best Film and Best Actor as well as several Jury Awards. Richard Bolger of Five Knight Films produces.

"'It is very exciting to have our North American premiere at Newport Beach in LA. The film went down a storm in Manchester winning 6 awards including best film and best actor. We've made a small local Irish film but it's anti violence message is universal and we are hoping the American's take to this story the way people in the UK have. I'll be flying over with John Connors and producer Richard Bolger to represent Irish film and do our little country proud!"

‘Out of Innocence’ which has earned Fiona Shaw an IFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Film comes from writer/director Danny Hiller and is based on the infamous Kerry Babies scandal of 1984.

‘Sanctuary’ from debut feature filmmaker Len Collin follows Larry and Sophie, two people with intellectual disabilities, who long to be together in a world that does everything to keep them apart. Is produced by Edwina Forkin of Guerilla Films.

Bankhouse Productions project ‘South’ from writer/director Gerard Walsh stars Darragh O’Toole as Tom, a young man who sets off in search of his estranged mother following his father’s death. It is produced by Matthew Toman.

Irish-Scottish co-production ‘Moon Dogs’ produced by Ripple World Pictures and directed by Philip John is also seen in the line-up. It follows two teenage step brothers who for the same girl on a chaotic road trip from Shetland to Glasgow.

Short films include IFTA-nominated ‘Gridlock’ (Ian Hunt-Duffy) and ‘Second to None’ (Vincent Gallagher), as well as ‘Bearing All’ (Garret Daly), ‘Date Night’ (Ross Carey), ‘Day Off’ (Stephen Hall), ‘Deirdre’ (Jo Southwell), ‘Gone Viral’ (Charlo Johnson), ‘Groundless’ (Eimear Callaghan), ‘The Ladies’ (Jake McKone), ‘The Nation Holds Its Breath’ (Kev Cahill), ‘Pebbles’ (Jonathan Shaw), ‘Uisce Beatha’ (Elaine Kennedy) and ‘Wait’ (Audrey O’Reilly).

Finally the music video for ‘Stand Down’ by Morrissey & Marshall from James Skerritt will also screen.
