Over 500 short film submissions were received in 2016
After receiving over 500 submissions resulting in a total of 14 short film screenings with the addition of four new strands, the Galway Film Fleadh (5th-10th July) has announced the successful shorts for their 28th edition.

The Galway Film Fleadh’s Oscar qualifying short film programme showcases a mix of drama, documentary and animation, with the winners of the Tiernan McBride Award for Best Short Drama and the James Horgan Award for Best Short Animation gaining eligibility for Oscar consideration.

This year’s dramas sees directing debuts from actor Martin McCann (who starred in the Oscar nominated short film ‘Boogaloo and Graham’) and DoP Kevin Tracey (‘Made in Belfast’) with ‘Starz’. Producer Ian Hunt Duffy will also make his directorial debut with the short film ‘Gridlock’ which stars Irish actors Moe Dunford (‘Patrick’s Day’), Peter Coonan (‘Love/Hate’) and Steve Wall (‘Vikings’). Other highlights include Jimmy Smallhorne’s Ballymun-based film ‘Fingerprints’, written by 19 year old screen writer Siobhan Duffy.

The 2016 Short Documentaries will cover a diverse range of topics over two programmes and this year also sees the introduction of a new strand of Human Rights documentaries telling stories from conflict zones, border crossings and refugee camps.

Speaking about this year’s Short Film Programme Coordinator Eibh Collins said: “I’m excited that this year we are supporting short filmmakers not only with screenings but now through our new panels & networking sessions.”

In addition to screening over seventy short films in a mix of Irish, English and foreign languages, the Fleadh will also screen the IFB funded commemorative After ’16 programme, a collection of nine short films in a mixture of live action, animation and documentary.

Sunday afternoon’s Irish Animation Premieres programme not only exhibits work from independent filmmakers but welcomes new filmmakers from IADT National Film School and Ballyfermot College of Further Education. With the World Premieres of the IFB funded Frameworks, this programme represents a roundup of the thriving animation industry in Ireland today.

The Fleadh will also present work from West of Ireland based filmmakers in the Way Out West category while the One Minute Film Festival and ‘2016 Best Of’ showcase from Little Cinema Galway will also return.

Beyond Ireland and the Fleadh are collaborating with Creative England to showcase some productions funded by schemes including ‘iShorts 2’ and ‘Funny Girls’.

This year’s festival will host not only shorts screenings but also panel discussions and networking events tailored towards short filmmakers, providing opportunities to meet International industry guests and their fellow filmmakers.

The short film programmes and events run across the festival from Wednesday 6th to Sunday 10th July.
