Raising Films has formally announced the launch of its newest chapter: Raising Films Ireland. The launch is supported by Screen Skills Ireland, the skills development unit within Screen Ireland, via the Screen Stakeholders Funding Scheme.

The Chapter will formally launch on Tuesday, 18th August at 3pm with a conversation between Dr. Susan Liddy and Hope Dickson Leach, as part of Screen Skills Ireland’s series of Screen Talks, which will be followed by the formal Chapter launch and an announcement of their plans for the next year.

Raising Films was established by five UK-based film sector workers who recognised, from the start, that film and television are international industries. Raising Films calls on screen industries to serve its parent and carer members better, to increase their number, and to aspire to the best possible practice, to make it possible for all voices to be heard. The Support Network aims to challenge, at a structural level, the demands the film and television industry makes of all of us.

In late 2019 Hope Dickson Leach presented a session on Raising Films at the X-Pollinator event; a cross-disciplinary professional development and networking initiative aiming to kickstart collaborations between female writing and directing talent and take positive action to rapidly address the gender imbalance in the Irish audio-visual industry.

Following Hope’s sessions a group of women came together in February 2020 from all corners of the creative industry to form the Irish chapter of Raising Films. This group is currently focusing on fundraising to focus on research into the industry in Ireland and the specifics needs of parents and carers working along with potential solutions.

One of Raising Films Ireland founders, Ailish Bracken commented:

“For years I had been musing on how to create achievable pathways for parents and carers to stay in or re-enter the industry and when I met Hope in Dublin last year, I was bolstered to discover there was already a framework and a support network there in Raising Films that we could become part of and springboard off. Since we decided to start the Irish chapter, we have been bowled over by the resounding support from all corners of the industry. The response has shown that there is a huge need for an initiative like this in the Irish creative industry. The landscape is changing here and has been for a few years and we are determined to be a part of that change and to have a seat at the table with the rest of the changemakers.”

Dr. Susan Liddy lectures in the Department of Media and Communication Studies in MIC, University of Limerick. Her research interests relate primarily to gender issues in the Irish film industry; motherhood and the film industry and the representation of older women on screen and behind the camera.

Hope Dickson Leach is a co-founder of Raising Films and has just released a new film, Ghost Light, made for the National Theatre of Scotland and the Edinburgh International Festival. She is currently developing several new feature films in the US and UK including a documentary based on Rachel Cusk’s seminal book ‘A Life’s Work’ with Passion Pictures. Hope is part of the new National Partnership for Culture in Scotland.

Speaking about the launch, Gareth Lee, Screen Skills Ireland Manager, said:

Screen Skills Ireland is proud to support the Irish chapter of Raising Films and their mission of inclusion for caregivers. The research and work done by this Chapter will help to ensure that talented professionals in the screen sector do not have to leave their careers to become parents and/or carers.”

Dr Susan Liddy added:

It’s heartening to witness so much work being done in Ireland to create a more gender equal and diverse industry. However, up to now, the systemic barriers and challenges for parents and carers have been sidestepped. As a result the contribution of many skilled workers is being seriously curtailed and many mothers, particularly, have been forced to leave the industry they love. I believe that the newly established Raising Films Ireland will herald real change and will lead the way in the creation of a more inclusive industry for everyone.

The Irish Chapter will be on social media in the coming months. In the meantime if you are based in Ireland and work in film and TV and want to know more about the activities of the Chapter please send an email.
