Production Preparations Underway for Female-Fronted Irish Housing Drama 'Herself'

Irish Actress Clare Dunne
Following the international success of ‘The Favourite’, Academy Award-nominated Irish Production Company Element Pictures is gearing up for its next production. Written by Irish actress Clare Dunne, ‘Herself’ will be produced by Sharon Horgan’s production company Merman.

Set in Dublin, ‘Herself' is the story of young mother Sandra who escape her abusive boyfriend and fights back against a broken housing system. She sets out to build her own home and in the process rebuilds her life and re-discovers herself.

‘Herself’ will mark Irish theatre actress Clare Dunne’s first leading role in a feature, having co-written the script with Malcolm Campbell (‘What Richard Did’). Phyllida Lloyd (‘The Iron Lady’, ‘Mamma Mia’) will direct the film having previously worked with Dunne on the Donmar Theatre’s all-female version of Shakespeare’s ‘Henry IV’.

Supported by Screen Ireland and BBC Films, production is slated to begin in Dublin at the end of April with final additions to the cast due in the coming weeks.

Speaking with Deadline, Element Pictures Ed Guiney said:

“The script is very fresh and full of heart and integrity. Clare wrote it for herself to star in and she’s an excellent actress. The combination of producers and creatives was an exciting one for us and it’s great to be involved in a project with strong new talent. The film’s subject will really resonate in the UK, Ireland and the U.S.”

The feature film has received two provisional offers of commitment to production from Screen Ireland having previously provided development funding in 2017.

Other Element projects currently in production include Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Pop. 1280’, Lenny Abrahamson’s BBC TV Drama ‘Normal People’ and feature film ‘A Man’s World’, and Starz!-BBC crime drama ‘Dublin Murders, which is currently in post-production.
