RTÉ have taken a new approach with home-produced ‘The School’, making the entire series available on the RTÉ Player last Friday (November 17th).
The online release came six days before episode one of the series is set to air, this Thursday November 23rd – at 10:35pm on RTÉ2.
This is the first time that RTÉ have taken this approach with a RTÉ produced series and is set to be RTÉ’s first steps toward making the RTÉ Player more than just a catch-up TV platform and instead giving viewers the ability to use the RTÉ Player like other online TV platforms such as SkyGo.
‘The School’ is a mockumentary style TV series created by Cork based comedy group CCCahoots who have previously done RTÉ Storyland web series, ‘(R)onanism’. The series follows a new primary school principal as he struggles to get to grips with a new school and ridiculous staff members ahead of the school's annual Nativity play.
Speaking about the online release of ‘The School’ RTÉ’s head of online, Aoife Byrne said:
“Making a richer and more varied content offering available online and on demand is part of RTÉ’s strategy to better serve audiences. The School is an example of great Irish binge-worthy content that audiences can enjoy on RTÉ Player, with the ability to watch all the episodes on demand. This is all part of our strategy of moving beyond just catch-up and turning Player into an online TV destination in its own right.”
